base_function=* could be split else considering the following:

  • *=operational : A better term is *=operations , but still not good. It's a relative concept, and mixable with other base_function=* here. Eg there is logistics operation, relative to management and administration; operational logistics is for combat operations, relative to strategic logistics. Others include opcon, oplan, operational mobility, etc. Related to service_branch=* , Better use *=combat , *=forces , or equivalent directly?
  • *=headquarters : Unclear whether it is the command, or hq of a (combat) unit related to the above. Use *=command ? Should eg military=command_centre be created for individual commands inside? https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=military=ommand#tags
  • *=logistics : Medical is part of logistics. It should be *=materiel ?
  • *=training : Should development of tactics; or development, engineering, experiment, and testing of new systems be included together? (eg Naval Surface Warfare Center, if it's considered a military=base ?) Then a broader word is needed.
  • *=hospital : Should the 17 TagInfo military=hospital be established first? How about a different term eg *=medical to avoid using the same word as the individual hospital? Maybe there are clinics and non-hospital medical facilities?

There is much potential overlap and confusion with service_branch=* I'm afraid. The base characteristics itself is not highlighted yet.
Concept (no idea how to name them yet):

  • Eg usage=* (TBD)
    • *=home : Home base, headquarters of a (combat) unit. Example & problem: I don't know if Ft Lewis should be considered as this for 2nd Infantry Division.
    • *=garrison (if needed): Base where a unit is stationed, but is not a home base.
    • *=forward (can use better word if easily confused with FOB, but what does that use? Also not the same as Main Operating Base) : Bases for forward deployment. But don't use if it is a home base for the host country. Eg Camp Humphreys for 2ID above?
    • *=expeditionary : Eg Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.
  • Eg service=* (TBD)

Ok I forgot about *=command for the "functional area". *=medical seems more fitting for a service_branch=medical there.
If systems development is combined with *=training or created separately, material=* might be changed to *=supply , or back to *=logistics considering equipment and maintenance & repair ...? Depends on how service_branch=* is laid out.
Another model that can be referred to are the warfighting functions. US Army and Marines have different numbers of them. Most of them may be compared with the groups of service_branch=* , especially for maneuver, fires & effects.
