Talk:Potlatch 1/Primer
Does it upload new changes as you do them? Ways are still labelled -4 and similar
- I was under the impression it doesn't upload stuff at all ATM. Bruce89 14:34, 7 May 2007 (BST)
- That's right, yes. Will be working on it this afternoon. Like the suggestions below, btw. --Richard 14:51, 7 May 2007 (BST)
New preset categories
Is it possible to incorporate a new template for mountainbike-path? I made one for JOSM (Talk:Mountainbike#Basic_information_for_mtb-tracks) and would like to use something like that in Potlatch as well. And since there is much to do to tag OSM for MTB, i think there will be many people thankful. --Kaivi 21:12, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Things visible from the air that you might trace from yahoo imagery
- Lake
- River
- Forest
- Urban area?
- Building
- Aeroway (runway, taxiway, apron, terminal)
Why is there no POI category for "Gas Station"? It would be very useful for driving.
Editing
Question: I'd like to ask what happens if say, five members edit the same area (same streets). Since potlash is only updated once a week... whose of thoes five members' changes to the roads will be visible, and what will happen to the others' changes? Thanks!
- Not sure where you've got the idea about only being updated once a week from - Potlatch is live editing. If you change a street, the next person to edit it will see your changes, even if there's only a few seconds separating you. The main static (non-editing) map view is only updated periodically - is that what you were thinking of? --Richard 11:38, 19 October 2007 (BST) User is confusing map imagery update that takes time vs live update of the database --EliotB 09:35, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, okay! So the once-a-week update is simply for those who want to download the waypoints to their computers... it has nothing to do with the editing?
- Regarding the live editing, what happens if I am working on one area and some other guy fixes some roads there too? Will I see his changes "in realtime"?
- If he draws new roads, they'll come down to you as soon as you drag the map a little - that always causes Potlatch to ask the server "what's in this area?". It doesn't yet show you updates to the ways that are already on the screen - that's something I hope to do in the future but not really an issue with our current number of users. --Richard 17:30, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Question: Could we also have some more leisure categories and amenities eg Shopping, school, Hospital, supermarket etc..
- Sure, but it helps me immensely if you can tell me what tags you'd like them to be - I'm not a tagging guru. :) --Richard 11:38, 19 October 2007 (BST)
- School (Name, district, city), hospital (Name, city), shopping center/mall (Name, city), restaurant (Name, city), police station (Name, district, city), fire station (Name, district, city), store/retail location (Name, city). Not sure if "city" is necessary, but I didn't see an obvious way of identifying city and county boundaries. --SalsaShark 04:35, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Question: Richard. Please, make an CTRL-Z function. I just spent some hours and now I just made the worst mistake ever. I accidentaly deleted all vectors! D: Is there any chanse of getting them back? It's like 3000 vectors we are talking about.
- I'm working on undo, but it's really difficult, which is why it hasn't happened overnight. :( Do I guess that you deleted a way with 3000 points, is that right? --Richard 21:35, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- My god. I feel really dumb! :/ No I actually deleted the borders of an island! So utterly stupid! Please search for "Lidingö" to find the island. Is there some possibility you could get it back from some backup? It feels so dumb oh my... Once again, I am really sorry!
- Okay. So no CTRL-Z as of yet =(. Well I'll put it like this: You can count me in that I'll spend some great time on mapping roads if I could "only" have three wishes fulfilled. It would be totally awsome if:
- 1. You could choose other map-sources as for example Google Maps etc.
- 2. CTRL-Z ..
- 3. If we could get the edit window to resize to the monitor res. I am getting an 24" 1080p TFT for my computer next month and I feel already now that I could be tons more productive if I could get to see a larger area at the same time. Would be great!

- What d'you mean "other map-sources as for example Google Maps"? Are you suggesting having google maps appear, so that you can trace over it in Potlatch? :-O -- Harry Wood 16:23, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, exactly! That would be awesome as google has great maps that yahoo often doesn't.

Question If two (or more) ways overlap each other, how can you control which one is selected when you click on one of them? --Muir 5 October 2009
- Select the shared node. Press / . --Richard 07:59, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
history/revert
Moin!
I accidently removed some information from a town and want to revert now. But pressing 'H' has no effect. What can I do? Is there any other way to access history? --Trublu 19:06, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Direction of a way
How do I tell what direction a way is in Potlatch? Additionally how can I reverse the direction of a way (I see from the changelog that this feature is implemented, but I don't know how to invoke it). --Seav 10:15, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- There's a little arrow icon at the bottom left. That points in the direction of the way. Click the icon to reverse it. --Richard 09:26, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm... Didn't really notice that before. Thanks! --Seav 10:15, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
What is the correct way of defining ways that have a single name but have different section with different directions? I live near a road which has 3 section: the first oneway south, the second oneway north and the third twoway. Should I split it in 3 ways? --Garden 14:48, 02 May 2008 (CEST)
- Yes, you have to split in three different ways. --Eimai 14:49, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Rendering of oneways
I think it would be great if Potlatch could render oneway streets with a little arrow pointing to the oneway direction. Is that possible? Ukuester 20:21, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Areas
Question:I'm a newcomer. I can't find how to draw an area, for instance a town, a district. I imagine it's explained somewhere, and suggest a link to that page be on this one. --http://solages.site.voila.fr/index_en.html 07:58, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
GPS Tracks
Question: When editing the map, if I bring up all GPS tracks in an area, is it possible to get information about the tracks that appear (how many are available, who uploaded them, keywords involved, etc)? Tin 00:18, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Question: I uploaded a track that had comments inserted into it as it was made. Like: "water". These comments didn't appear with the track. Should they? Muir 5 October 2009
- No. However, waypoints will appear if you start Potlatch with the track already loaded by clicking 'edit' next to the track in the 'GPS Traces' page. --Richard 07:57, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Hotkeys
I miss a hotkey for adding a tag. Specially useful when adding multiple tags. --Bart9h 20:46, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- + should do it. --Richard 21:23, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
How do I confirm changes to editing tags
I've gone in to add a road. Seems to have done it ok. I then get the box up for editting the road as a residential street, and named it "London Lane" (this is in Hackney, E8 3PR). The cursor is now sitting at the end of the road name I've typed in.
Q: How do I get the system to "confirm change" "submit" "upload" or whatever you want to call it? Do I just close the browser window? There doesn't seem to be any way of finishing my edit, or confirming that the change has been uploaded? cheers --Mgaved 14:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
A: Click on a blank area of the map, so the highlighting on the street disappears. You may see a spinning icon with "Saving Data" appear in the top right of the page. --EliotB 09:22, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
GPS + Yahoo imagery
I suggest giving more prominence in the primer to the ability to load GPS data, and to drag the Yahoo imagery, linking these 2 functions.
"Before starting to trace over Yahoo imagery, first load any GPS data for the area you are looking at. Then drag the background image so that it lines up with the GPS data (and with ways that have already been traced using GPS data). This will make the positioning of your tracing up to 10m more accurate"
I'll add this to the main page if I don't get any negative comment within a week or so. --EliotB 09:35, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Need basic info on relations
This document needs to have at least links to information about relations, and possibly some basic information about them. I suggest in the Editing Tags section, a basic definition of relations. Maybe something like the following, to be inserted between the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of the section:
- Relations are groups of ways or nodes that are all part of some larger object. They may be segments in a long highway=*, coastlines of an archipelago, or the coastlines of a lake. When all of the objects in a relation share a tag because they are in the relation, the tag should be placed on the relation instead of on the objects. For example, the coastline of a lake and the coastline of an island in the lake are separate ways. Each belongs to the same relation, and that relation would be tagged with natural=water and name=*.
I'm suggesting this because of the difficulty I had in figuring out how to draw and tag a lake within a forest. --Spirko 15:45, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- While it's true that some description relations might be in place, this page is IMO best kept as a simple primer, as it then has to mention that Relations are not categories, too. Actually, after a bit of browsing the current state, I think they should rather be mentioned at Beginners_Guide_1.3 and here should possibly only be an (explained!) link to the Potlatch FAQ.
