Just a question

Why in the "Avaible languages" section in this page, the links are pointing on the http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FR:Project_of_the_week/2011/Jul_13 ? I'm about to change this, but may be it's done on purpose. And if it is, i'm not sure it's very clear for readers... --Xis 14:50, 21 July 2011 (BST)

Sorry, but I don't understand. If I click on "English" I see the English text, on "German" the German and on "French" the French. What do you want to change? -- AndiPersti 19:25, 21 July 2011 (BST)

May be i was not very clear. On the page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Project_of_the_week if you click on Deutsch you are directed to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Project_of_the_week/2011/Jul_13 instead of http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Project_of_the_week . Same for any language. I think any language link on any page should link the same page in a different language... Am i clearer ? --Xis 09:30, 22 July 2011 (BST)

Ok, I see now :-). The problem with the last week was that an additional parameter was added to the language-template {{languages|xxxxxxx}}. If you just use the template without parameters - {{languages}} - everything is fine. See the current week -- AndiPersti 08:16, 25 July 2011 (BST)

For Project of the Week June 13, 2010

Husky the Muskie was already on the local map for Kenora ON, and the World's Largest Ukrainian Easter Egg was already on the local map for Vegreville, AB

Meggo added The Canada Goose in Wawa, ON, The Giant Thimble in Toronto, ON, The Spirit Catcher sculpture in Barrie, ON, The Big Nickel in Sudbury, ON, the copy of the Starship Enterprise in Vulcan, AB, the World's Largest Dinosaur in Drumheller, AB, Aaron the Blue Heron in Barrhead, AB and the Giant Aluminum Baseball Bat in Edmonton, AB.

I am finding it a challenge to adequately place some of the roadside attractions on the map remotely, because the Yahoo satellite imagery for smaller cities is not at a sufficient resolution to add anything more than a general placement. These definitely need local experts to confirm and place with accuracy, and to add the amenities! - Meggo

Projects have NO effect

As it seems the outcomes / effects of the project of the week are ..... nothing! IMHO the graphs show that the projects do NOT increase the activity in the project area. Or am I wrong? --ALE! 08:28, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

This could be one option. Another option would be to redesign the POTWs so people actually participate. I have no concrete ideas of waht to change, however, the POTWs as they are now do no attract people. That's more or less a fact looking at the graphs. --ALE! 14:24, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

After the experience (I always requested a tool to measure the results) I'm not sure if this is the right tool to do so. To me the POTW is more or less a good try to unite the community and to show them what's possible/missed. I'm not sure if participation would result in a huge increasement of the keys or if this is just a reminder to add things after weeks have passed. Richard did a lot of work every week so to me it's not fair to say 'stop' cause it's useless (spot at the DB). Any ideas how to promote POTW in a different way? --!i! 17:50, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps the effect of PotW is zero. ALE! might have looked at the graphs on 03 Feb while my server was busy with other things and the graphs were not updating. Rw 14:57, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I use to map since almost one year and I discovered POTW recently. Perhaps should you publish the new projects at least on the osm's diary and on some talk-** mailing lists ?

Hi Fabi, well your right, we might promote the POTW in a better way. We currently do it passive (blogs, diaries,...) but we will test active on the mailing lists. For longer Timespan, we have Project of the month. The POTW is in my eyes a bringing the community together and give them some inspirations on what might be mapped :) --!i! 07:10, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

I think the POTW/M is a nice tool to invite contributors to add tags to their existing cities...and make them discover other tags ... i see it more like a "Tagging feature of the week" :)

I don't expect POTW/W to have immediate visibel effects, because if I get to know a tag in the POTW in one week, I don't neccessarily go out the same week to collect the data and map it. This would cause to review my area every week! Instead I become aware of the feature and map it the next time I go out anyway, so the effect will show over the next months. Same thing happens with me! I have been "following" POTW for a short time, and have already learned quite a bit of how to map things properly. I never actively worked specifically on the POTW topics, but I improved the quality of my mapping of the "featured things" when doing my regular mapping work. So, for me, it was much more a matter of quality than quantity. (Which, I think, is already enough to justify the existence of POTW). --LMBarros 10:21, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

+1, I'm still catching up on florists this week. I know that two mappers have shown real dedication to the PotW which I suggested, see [1] and [2]. For my part, creating the page enabled me to think more about the tagging and documenting it. PotW, like IotW also ensures that various web sites have new content on a regular basis: probably important for engaging more irregular mappers. SK53 14:55, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
