Good work! I've often wondered why we didn't have any way of tagging a guard booth? --Fizzie41 (talk) 05:19, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Operations Centre

Resolved

For tagging a security control room, where cameras / alarms etc are monitored, you should be able to use the office=security tag as a node at that location in the building --Fizzie41 (talk) 05:18, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

I think it should be allowed in some situations - It makes sense when the company that runs the operations centre is a security company. But if the operations centre is a small part of a larger organization, then office=security doesn't feel right (e.g. Sydney Trains or Auckland Transport). --Kylenz 03:59, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

True! OK, how about stick with the basic theme & add another key:
man_made=surveillance + surveillance:type=security_operations (security_control?), with a definition: the Operations Centre / Control Room from where security operations for an establishment are controlled, &/or from where security & surveillanec equipment such as cameras & alarms are monitored from.
How's that sound? --Fizzie41 (talk) 04:22, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Sounds good, I think that should probably be written up in a separate proposal. I'll make a note of it on this wiki page. --Kylenz 04:44, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

man_made=surveillance

Resolved

This proposal currently calls for security guard stations and checkpoints to be tagged as man_made=surveillance. As far as I can tell, this tag mostly describes a surveillance device. surveillance:type=guard is documented and was previously proposed as part of Proposed features/Extended tags for Key:Surveillance, but it seems odd to use the man_made=* key for these facilities. After all, amenity=police is well-established for police stations and police=checkpoint is approved for police checkpoints. It would be nice to have some sort of consistency with these tags rather than using man_made=surveillance. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 01:39, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

surveillance:type=* is bad style. Inside, *=camera and *=ALPR isn't really much mutually exclusive either, when that proposal calls for camera:*=* and sensor:*=* to handle the former and *=sensor. *=guarddog is even more out-of-place.
The otherwise de facto Proposed features/New barrier types had a barrier:personnel=* on barrier=*. Elsewhere, amenity=charging_station in the wild has authentication:person=* and authentication:ask_the_cashier=*.

Maybe we need amenity=security and security=checkpoint to match amenity=police and police=checkpoint (and military=checkpoint). Then surveillance=* can remain for surveillance equipment. office=security would remain for the administrative office. A future proposal could define other values for security=* like operations_centre. --Kylenz 02:28, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
I've changed the proposal to use amenity=security instead of surveillance:type=guard --Kylenz 03:17, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Base

This feature should be for "A place where guard(s) are stationed" on duty or performing their functions. "A base where security guards stand by." doesn't have "surveillance" happening. In my place, this is usually the same as the office=security . --- Kovposch (talk) 06:04, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Agreed, I worded that badly. Continued in the discussion above. --Kylenz 02:28, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Checkpoint

"A checkpoint where security guards control access into a location." should use another *=checkpoint as in police=* and military=*. This is a more active and involved function than surveillance. An overwatch from a distance at a centralized location is obvious much different than someone guarding and checking the immediate area. As mentioned above, there was a barrier:personnel=* forgotten, although it may not be the best.

This makes sense, continued in the discussion above. --Kylenz 02:28, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
