hitching_post vs hitching_rail vs horse_parking

I wonder if hitching_post is a good tag name, most of the places for hitching horses seem to be rails. In the article you wrote that "It can be thought of as a counterpart to amenity=bicycle_parking but for horses." So we should perhaps better use amenity=horse_parking (which is already in the database, see below) or something like that and define it similarly; this would

  • allow a subtag horse_parking=post|rail|box|... (for "box" see photo on page trail_riding_station)
  • make it easier for mappers to learn the tag (if they already know bicycle_parking)

amenity=horse_parking

Just for completeness: There is also another related draft: tourism=trail_riding_rest

@Hufkratzer: At least in Ohio (what I'm familiar with), "hitching post" is considered an umbrella term referring to both posts and rails. That may differ from other places. You have a point that the amenity=*_parking pattern may be more discoverable to some mappers, particularly non-English-speakers. However, English speakers would find amenity=horse_parking undiscoverable, since it takes a modicum of head-scratching to realize that it is, after all, a form of parking. "Hitching post" and "hitching rail" are well-established, even everyday terms in many English dialects.

If anything, it would be great to consolidate the sprawling set of amenity=*_parking tags into a single amenity=parking, using access tags to clarify the intended mode(s) of transportation. As it is, more obscure vehicle types end up parking at amenity=parking while much more common bicycle parking ends up at a specialized amenity=bicycle_parking.

I agree that "horse_parking" sounds strange. I just want to add for now that I found a new wiki page for amenity=dog_parking. --Hufkratzer (talk) 13:28, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
@Hufkratzer and B-unicycling: amenity=horse_parking was recently created, so to avoid further fragmentation, I started a discussion on the tagging mailing list about which one to prefer. [1] – Minh Nguyễn 💬 20:18, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Why onArea=yes?

@Maro21: Regarding [2]: Why onArea=yes? Compare Tag:amenity=hitching_post#How to map: "Add a node at the location of the hitching post. Alternatively, if it is a rail, draw a way from one end of the rail to the other.". --Hufkratzer (talk) 01:14, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

It wasn't me who set "onArea=yes". Compare with the previous version: [3] - there was onArea=yes too, but it loaded that value from the data item which shouldn't be happening. My edit was only technical, not substantive. If you know how to map this object, go ahead and edit this article. maro21 21:06, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
I set onArea=no according to section "How to map" although there are 3 areas tagged with this tag. If someone thinks "onArea" should be "yes", feel free to change it back. --Hufkratzer (talk) 22:07, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Note that copying values from data items should not be done blindly: if OSM Wiki has no value set then one pulled from data items is relatively often wrong Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
