Talk:Tag:amenity=studio
Proposal
There are an increasing number of radio and television studios, both public service and independent production companies. Some are open to the public for various events and tours. Most cities in the UK and many large towns will have a studio, at least for radio. This tag could apply to a music recording studio too.

Discussion
I would not consider this to be an amenity. Maybe a building? --Hawke 19:17, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- the fact it's a building is irrelevant, that's just a container to house it in. a studio could be in a military bunker (sure someone does, can't remember who), or an underground bank vault (see aphex twin). if it is in a building, i think that should be tagged separately. maybe we need another top-level tag, for less important facilities (a recording studio isn't really on the same importance level as a hospital, or lawyer's office)? - I think amenity is appropriate - it is a place that people visit to do something (e.g. make a recording or programme). It is also a building, so are many amenities. Chillly 22:35, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we could include newspaper publishers in this proposal. Perhaps amenity=media, type=audio|video|print? --Michael gd 19:31, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- i see what you're getting at, and i do like the idea of an elegant set of tags which that would generally fit with, but it isn't exactly right. a studio is not necessarily media (as in newspapers/tv). it can be recording voice overs for educational/training videos, pre-recorded automated announcements for train stations/airports, and a range of other things. Myfanwy 19:40, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- I think studios are different from newspapers. There are sometimes events at studios and people visit studios to make a recording or programme. Newspapers offices are really just that - offices. Chillly 22:35, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Missing photo studio in OSM. Place where staff using professional equipement making high quality photo images for customers.

problematic use of the "type" key
The use of "type" as a key is a bad idea. Mapping an audio studio as a multipolygon (type=multipolygon) would not work, for example. Can we choose another key instead, such as "studio_type"? --Tordanik 07:41, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- I agree. I'd propose amenity=studio, studio=*. --Westnordost (talk) 11:02, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, this would work just as well. How do we go about changing this? --Tordanik 18:25, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Ateliers
What about artist's workshops, a.k.a studio in English (or atelier in American English and German)? See Wikipedia on Studio

The Map Features Craft section appears to define the "craft" key for that.

tag is not clear
I think this tag suffers from several problems. For one I don't think we should put broadcasting and recording studios in the same category. But if we did, why don't we include movie studios as well? Or dance studios, art studios, kitchen studios, photo studios, and what ever studio else there might exist? I would also tend to distinguish tv and radio broadcasting at the main level, as they have different requirements and aspect. A tv studio is typically a place where visitors are common (attending tv shows etc), it is generally huge, with administration areas, parkings etc., while a music recording studio is a place where visitors/spectators are usually not admitted, and which might more often than not be just a room with certain acoustical properties. There's no sense in arbitrarily mixing together some very different kinds of studios while keeping others like film studios out.
Then the tag name is too unspecific for what it aims to describe. It should rather be "tv_studio" (television_studio) or (sound/audio) "recording_studio" or "movie_studio". Let's not forget there are all kind of studios like medical studio, architectural studio, health studio, dancing studio, etc. and the term "studio" describes the workplace of an artist or workman. The studio key confirms this ambiguity, as it includes several types of studios that are not included in amenity=studio [1]
It is also not clear whether "and broadcasting them" is meant as an exclusive "and" or as "or" / "and or". Should places where only broadcasting is organized get the tag? Is broadcasting required or can "record-only places" get the tag as well? --Dieterdreist (talk) 21:12, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- I agree, this tag is nor really clear and vague name is not helping Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 05:19, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- I don't see why studio=video means "film studio" either, or even studio=audio for "recording studio" for that matter. Proposed features/Studio likely intends this to be a general category, so "video" and "audio" are the mediums. The former could be VOD (should studio=television be live broadcast only?), movies, online videos, advertisements, or anything; the latter including music, podcasts, audiobooks. Key:studio further has some different wording on studio=audio as "Sound recording studio" from Taginfo. ---- Kovposch (talk) 12:42, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Movie ranches?
How would one go about tagging a movie ranch? These sometimes don't even have buildings within their limits. --AragonChristopherR17z (talk) 06:51, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
