Automated remote toll systems

How about an additional tag to indicate that automatic toll collection is available, and what system it's part of? E.g., toll:automatic=E-ZPass for New York, toll:automatic=I-Pass for Chicago, etc. --BigPeteB 15:43, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

We have the same thing in France, it's named "Télépéage" (used by several private operators: Vinci/ASF is the most important and the system also allows paying parkings in cities managed by this operator), it uses a small electronic box. All French motorways are equiped (so it's not necessary to tag them; in fact all devices from operators of French motorways are compatible in France).

We could tag the number of lanes reserved for passing with them, but this may vary depending on trafic (the number lanes on each direction may also be adapted), there's only the convention that these lanes are the most external (just after the specific lane for trucks and long vehicles which exists sometime), and a few central lanes used for the slowest passage, for paying with cash.

Users of credit cards use the central lanes (using a credit card is reasonably fast, you insert it and its ejected immediately with the payment ticket if you want, you don't need to compose your pin when amounts to pay are small, the transaction is also secured by cameras identifying the driver and the vehicle). But even these lanes for credit cards are equiped with the remote sensors. Lanes for "Télépéage" have a specific "t"-like logo.

It's very common in Portugal too (more than in Spain) where most local drivers have the device in their car and trucks. UK is rarely equiped except around cities like London (with its specific system).

(you don't need to stop completely the vehicle you just have to drive slowly, the device is remotely detected and the barrier will open).

There should be a new trans-european system working allowing devices rent from various European coutrnies to be usable in multiple countries (European payments are already possible for small amounts, with a monthly bill and with cross-European bank authorization systems)

But for now these devics are specific for each road network operator, even if locally the systems used in a municipality may also be used to pay, with mutual agreements between organizations.

In 2018 the West European system is born: Italy, France, Spain & Portugal users can have a unique device which works with the electronic paying systems on the 4 motorway national systems.

Direction?

Tool booths usually only apply in one direction. How to tag this? It's not practical to tag every road inside a city with Key:toll. --Olejorgenb 11:34, 23 September 2011 (BST)

The easiest way to tag this is to put the barrier=toll_booth on a oneway road. Another option would be barrier:forward=toll_booth. This means that the toll only has to be tagged at the point of collection, and not for every road in a city. Spark 13:03, 16 October 2012 (BST)

Actually not always the case.

* On French motorways, near the toll booth, the two directions are no longer separated physically (ecept by mobile signaling plots on the ground), and the speed is very limited when you approach them. This allows changing the number of central lanes affected to one direction or to the other one, depending on trafic projections or effectively measured. Note that you have a toll on entry (to take a ticket or identify your vehicle remotely) and on exit (for the payment).

* Toll booths for tunnels and bridges are only present before entering them, not on exit (for security reasons: the exit platform must be kept free) but then the number of lanes on exit is constant and they are kept separate from entry lanes.

* Bridges or road-dikes that link smaller islands have a toll both in a single direction (you pay only in one direction, when entering the island, not when exiting it to return to the continent). E.g. for the bridge linking the French "Île de Ré" (on the Atlantic western coast near La Rochelle). Not all islands have a toll, most bridges or dike-roads and free. Some islands are not directly accessible by vehicles, you must pay a parking on the continent (e.g. near le Mont Saint-Michel) and then cross the dike or bridge by foot (or pay to take a minibus).

Automated ONLY toll gantries

I see the above section about automated toll collection. However, how should locations on highways be noted where the only toll collection available is through automated tolls. These "toll gantries" are not really "barriers" as this tag implies...they are above the road and do not slow down traffic. Right now, I've added the toll booth tag, but I think toll gantries should be a separate tag.it may also be useful to tag toll roads where only automated toll collection (through wireless transponders or pay-by-plate billing) is the only way to pay the toll...there are no toll booths to pay cash/credit. +1 that electronic tolls are not barriers per se (nor are they booths, for that matter). Your second comment is also on point: in Florida there are (often parallel) sections of highway that are intended only for customers with a transponder (a system called SunPass). As it stands, a routing algorithm could not determine that taking a given SunPass road segment would require having a transponder or result in a fine if that's not the case. The wiki for the toll tag discourages its use on nodes, but it could be extended to map electronic collection points (e.g. toll=etc or toll:collection_point=etc|cash|credit_cards|.... In addition to toll=yes, the toll section of road could be tagged with toll:etc_only=yes, for example, or using the access tag (e.g. access=no, access:etc=yes). Obvioulsy I'm using "etc" above to stand for Electronic Toll Collection, but shouldn't probably be used as such as it could easily be confused with et cetera.--Carciofo (talk) 14:29, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

We have a similar use case in South Africa with the introduction of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) that uses open-road tolling. Although I agree it should be captured at nod level, I see it is currently captured as a separate building (way - see for example [1] ). I agree that gantries are not really 'barriers'. Recently, I've started to add "highway=toll_gantry" to the toll payment areas in motorways, besides "barrier=toll_booth". As mentioned above, in these places there's no need to stop and no barrier either. The "problem" with this is the need to add another highway that passes through these nodes. Also, I'm adding "payment:<toll system here>=only, to define that it only accepts a certain electronic payment system. This case, and the case of free-flow toll collection cited above, could be tagged with a subtype toll_booth=*, which value could indicate if that is card dispensing, collecting money, or the virtual barrier for RFID or license-plate based collection. Mapping as areas instead of nodes?

The "How to Map" section has always suggested mapping these features as a node which is shared by the highway way, but the "Description" box also allows use on area objects. I believe iD also allows this method of mapping, which has been used about 5% of the time, compared to nearly 95% use of the tag on nodes.

In favor of mapping on a node is that most other barrier=* features which obstruct a highway=* are only mapped as nodes. Also, it is easier for mappers to use a single node rather than drawing an area, and it's easier for database users to interpret the barrier as belonging to the highway if the tag is on a shared node. Perhaps it is best to remove the suggestion to map as areas.

Toll-free road with tollbooths

I'm having trouble figuring out how to map highway A8 in Croatia. Most tolled highways in Croatia have ticket tolling. You take a ticket at the tollbooth when you get on, and when you get off you present the ticket and pay according to the distance between two interchanges.

The thing is, this highway has a long section (Vranja-Rogovići) which is still part of the ticket system, but itself is not tolled. If you pass through this section, you don't pay for the distance traveled through it. For example if you get on at Kanfanar and exit at Vranja, you pay exactly the same as if you exited at Rogovići. If you get on and off somewhere between (inclusive) Vranja and Rogovići you still have to take the ticket at the first tollbooth and present it at the second, but you don't pay anything.

This arrangement has existed for a long time but somebody initially mapped this stretch as toll=yes as well. I corrected it a few days ago to toll=no, and my GPS app now colors correctly this stretch as toll-free (so it has received the update), but won't route through it with no toll roads option enabled. I suppose this is because it would still have to route through the above described barrier=toll_booth nodes. How do I map this in a semantically correct way and still get it to route properly? It appears you have mapped this section correctly, so to get the routing to work properly, you will need to mention the problem to the routing app developers. Ticket machines instead of toll booths

In many motorways, you only pay when you exit the motorway, so that the system can calculate the amount to pay. This means that when entering the motorway there's no toll booth, only a machine that delivers a ticket. ┗ The 'surveillance:type' tag is used for devices that do not charge a fee and only identifies vehicles, and in particular, the automatic license plate recognition system requires 'surveillance:type=ALPR'. Multiple lanes

It is not desirable to split road into multiple highway=* lines at toll gates.
