Talk:Tag:building=office
Government/commercial office buildings
I think that can not generalize to all buildings as commercial. For example: this building can not be commercial: File:Pentagon_Aerial_on_September_11,_2002_by_Angela_Stafford,_U.S._Air_Force_(DOD_020911-F-3968S-001)_(290165442).jpg
I think that the correct labeling should be: building=office + office=government --User:Carlos Brys 14:11, 19. Feb. 2016
- I think it's better to use building=public and office=administrative for the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.. --Reneman (talk) 15:36, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
onRelation=yes/no
There is disagreement happening regarding whether this tag should labelled as onRelation=yes or onRelation=no in the right hand panel. Please see the discussion at Template talk:ValueDescription#Relation multipolygon and onRelation=no?. Please do not discuss via edit comments while reverting on this page.

why this tag is discouraged?
building=office for me is clearly better than building=commercial for building constructed as an office block, for example File:Euroclear w Kraków Bonarka for Business 2017.jpg - as building=commercial covers extreme range of building types. Also, changing building type just because offices are now rented by a government entity rather than by a company is a bit weird. Building type should stay the same in such situation. - The status was set to 'deprecated' with this version: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:building%3Doffice&diff=1539290&oldid=1476625 by Hanif Al Husaini who does not even have an own user page, so maybe this edit happened by accident? -- ENT8R (talk) 12:45, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- It was also partially added in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:building%3Doffice&diff=prev&oldid=1473511 I notified this user and I will wait for a reply. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 16:36, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- My change was an result of this discussion. (note Holger === zuse :). I would be happy to promote building=office again. --Zuse (talk) 17:55, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

- I searched through the mailing list archives and did not find anything, only a general discussion about public buildings and that its definition is rather vague and in the forum I found a few ("how to map X?") questions from 2015-2016 in which building=office was suggested as "the proper way to map X" (without opposition). --Westnordost (talk) 19:16, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- At the very least current usage must be described. For now I did it and removed recommendation to use hopelessly generic building=commercial. Further comments are welcomed Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:05, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- If we remove office buildings from building=commercial, then what's left? Or to put it differently: Your objection seems to be that there are a lot of building=commercial which are very different from offices, and that the tag is therefore too broad. Can you give examples for that? --Tordanik 13:30, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- I always understood "commercial" as a category, on the same level as "residential". Some things that come to my mind that I would probably most likely tag as "commercial" if not more specifically: cinema buildings, buildings built as restaurants, buildings on a (permanent) fair, buildings on a golf course, exhibition halls, congress centres, the warehouses of wholesale markets (because they are not really retail), casinos, a self-storage buildings, buildings with mixed/generic commercial usage (for example https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%BChnerposten ), boat rental buildings, ... well, I could go on (was looking at a map of Hamburg). You may have the opinion that one or the other thing I mentioned should be tagged differently, but my point is that "general commercial activities" does not have to mean "offices". --Westnordost (talk) 14:08, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

- Also mentioned 3 years ago in Talk:Key:building#building.3Doffice, which links to a 2012 edit. I prefer building=office. Mrwojo (talk) 15:40, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
How to tag building with multiple ngo/npo offices?
How to tag building where multiple ngo/non-profit organizations have office and even some shops are there?
- What was the main original purpose of the building? For example something constructed as an office buildings with some shop areas as an addition would be tagged as building=office Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:46, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- Additionally, note that this tag denotes an "office building", not an office. There can be any number of offices inside. Use office=* to specify what kind of office is in the building and if the building is not occupied completely by one office (=company /ngo), tag the different offices as single nodes within the building outline instead. --Westnordost (talk) 19:18, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- I should post this question on https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/ask/ before it gets offtopic. "What was the main original purpose of the building?" is main question here. Since building in my case is big old school - old building, it's not building=office. Inside building are now many offices, what should be properly tagged. Thay all have same building entrance and here is the real question how to tag all of them. --Mitjajez (talk) 14:53, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
- In this case, you should tag it as building=school + building:use=office and if you want, tag the single NGOs, company offices etc. as single nodes within the building outline as office=*. Additionally, also for reasons of verifiability, you can use level=* to indicate on which floor each office is located. --Westnordost (talk) 18:01, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
