Riding hall photo
Hi,
A better image could be something like this one, showing the inside of the riding hall.
In France and switzerland, rinding hall don't look like this:
They look like the previous one :

- Hmm. For me something like
- or
- looks quite different to
- but
- looks quite similar to
- just that the latter shows a larger part of the building.
- Most building types in {{Building typology}} have external views; I find that better than an internal view because most mappers will only see the building from the outside. Can you provide other suggestions? --Hufkratzer (talk) 21:16, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
- - we could provide a different picture for french and german page ?
- - we could provide external and internal view ?
- - mappers use several sources to map buildings (external view, signpost, yellow pages…).
- - external view (especially for a "walker") is sometime very similar for a riding hall, a barn or a stable.
For example, the internal view is provided for stable or veterinary in the riding page. - --Pyrog (talk) 06:07, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
- * I don't know any reason why we could not have different photos on the French, English and German pages, we also translate the texts.
- * I have added small photo galleries with examples from differnt countries and exterior and interior views to this tag page.
- * With an interior view as the title photo someone who just looks at the tag value "riding_hall" and at the photos and doesn't read the description may perhaps assume that this tag shall be used for every building that is used for indoor horse riding. This is not so (should be explained more in detail in the text). OTOH was built as a riding hall but is now used as a theatre, so the interior looks quite different.
- * Unfortunately, I couldn't find a photo with an exterior view of a French riding hall on Commons.

Combination with leisure=pitch, leisure=sports_centre or leisure=sports_hall
There are 3 tags in used to combine with this building type, to describe an indoor arena / riding hall / indoor school (UK english), / covered arena:
- 1) leisure=pitch - "an area designed for playing a particular sport, normally designated with appropriate markings"
- 2) leisure=sports_centre - "a distinct facility where sports take place within an enclosed area."
- 3) leisure=sports_hall - "a building that is used as a sports hall or Gymnasium: a large room for indoor sports."
Outdoor arenas / outdoor rings / outdoor (equestrian) schools are normally tagged as leisure=pitch + sport=equestrian, so this suggests that a covered riding arena (riding hall) should be tagged as leisure=pitch. Right now there are 51 combinations of building=riding_hall + leisure=pitch, and sometimes there is a leisure=pitch mapped separatedly, inside of the building (since the riding surface is usually smaller than the whole building at least a little) - it's not easy to search for these.
There are also 61 combinations with leisure=sports_centre, which I suppose makes sense because the tag description is somewhat broad, but it seems to me that a single "pitch" (arena) should not be the whole sports centre, but rather the sports_centre ought to include the surrounding grounds as well, including outside riding areas, stables, etc.
Then there is the new tag leisure=sports_hall used 31 times in combination. I believe this is incorrect, because all the other examples on that page are Gymnasiums (in the US English sense), and indoor sports hall with a hard surface floor, used for non-equestrian indoors sports. Usually the floor is wood.
So I would recommend combining with leisure=pitch or recommending that this be mapped separately if it does not take up the whole area of the building (e.g. if there are seats or aisles or rooms with toilets inside of one or more sides of the building). --Jeisenbe (talk) 21:31, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- I don't agree with you. I will ask on the tagging list what they think about your recommendations and your edits. But this has to be prepared a bit and will take some time. Please have some patience.
- For now I only want to express my surprise that you wrote here that it is incorrect to use leisure=sports_hall for riding halls "because all the other examples on that page are Gymnasiums (in the US English sense), and indoor sports hall with a hard surface floor, used for non-equestrian indoors sports. Usually the floor is wood." while at that time when you wrote that here there was an example for a riding hall on that page (see here). You yourself have shortly afterwards removed this riding hall example (see here) and added the text about the floor (see here) that you cite here. It looks like you want to support your recommendations here by your own subsequent (nearly parallel) edits, compare Talk:Tag:leisure=sports_hall#Scope of the tag.
- And I am also surprised to see that in this edit you recommend to tag riding halls with leisure=sports_centre while here on the discussion page you recommend leisure=pitch. Can you explain that?
- --Hufkratzer (talk) 15:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- The issue has meanwhile been discussed on the tagging mailing list:
- "Is tag leisure=sports_hall suitable for riding halls?". The outcome was that leisure=pitch should not be combined with building=*, compare Tag:leisure=pitch#covered. So leisure=sports_hall fits better for riding halls than leisure=pitch, even if the indoor arena takes up the whole area of the building. I think this was also the opinion of User:Polarbear w in the discussion Talk:Tag:leisure=sports_hall#Scope_of_the_tag.
- Also leisure=sports_hall fits better for riding halls than leisure=sports_centre because riding halls almost always are just a part of a larger facility and have no "centre" character, see also this older discussion. Currently we still have some more combinations of building=riding_hall with leisure=sports_centre (64) than with leisure=sports_hall (39), but this difference is not huge and in the first half of 2021 the increase for the combination with leisure=sports_hall was higher (13) than for the combination with leisure=sports_centre (4). We also don't recommend to combine building=riding_hall with leisure=pitch (see above) although this combination is currently used 68 times.
- I have already updated the tag page for leisure=sports_hall according to these discussions and added back the riding hall example that you had removed there. I will also adapt the pages Tag:building=riding_hall and Riding. --Hufkratzer (talk) 20:44, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
