Talk:Tag:military=barracks
A tag for specifying units/regiments?
In the UK, military barracks tend to be used by one particular regiment or unit. For instance, Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge, London, is used by The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. That information is the sort of useful metadata one might wish to have attached to military buildings and sites. Thoughts? Tom Morris 00:02, 6 June 2012 (BST)
building=*
Since 'barracks' is defined as 'Buildings where soldiers live and work'; why is it not tagged something like building=barracks or at least requires building=yes/military along with military=barracks.
Same question could be applied to aeroway=aerodrome + aerodrome=military instead of military=airfield.

- The German translation of "barracks" is "Kaserne" which means the whole area including courtyards, service roads, parade grounds etc., typically with a wall or fence around that whole area. The German page defines military=barracks that way, deviating from the English page. I wonder if the English page is just sloppy (thus should be refined), or if the meaning of the word "barracks" is really limited to the building(s). --Fkv (talk) 19:31, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, in British English, "barracks" refers only to the buildings in which Service personnel live & sleep https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Tag:military%3Dnaval_base, not the entire Base, although the Base may well be named "xxx Barracks". Please also see proposal at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Military_bases which includes suggestion re changing this --Fizzie41 (talk) 00:02, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
- As mentioned below, now the military base proposal has been accepted, I have modified this page so that it explicitly states barracks are only the area where personnel live/sleep. This could still be an area inside a base, rather than just a building. My rationale is that several buildings may form the "barracks" inside a base. However, we could restrict the barracks tag to buildings only if that was the consensus. Casey boy (talk)
Barracks vs base
Based on the recently accepted proposal for military=base, I have updated this page to make it clear barracks is intended only for the area/buildings in which service personnel live/sleep. It is not for a whole base. Casey boy (talk) 11:11, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Landuse/Building
The wiki indicates that landuse=military is mandatory. However, landuse should not be used on a building. I suggest that this would be better as building=military is mandatory where a single building is being tagged, with landuse=military being mandatory where the area contains an area bigger than a single building.
I have now noticed that military=base already says that is how it should be tagged, so have changed the page to match. Comment added 4 March 2021 by Mikebag
