Deprecating all of place_of_worship:type

Apparently the tag currently used for this is place_of_worship:type=lourdes_grotto.

Key:place_of_worship:type currently says:

  • An alternative to this tag is place_of_worship=*. It is better documented and is used more often. Mappers may wish to consider migrating to that tag instead.

So I think instead of just deprecating place_of_worship:type=lourdes_grotto in favor of place_of_worship=lourdes_grotto, it would make sense to do the same also for the other values of place_of_worship:type=* like place_of_worship:type=chapel.

That is a good idea, which was mentioned in this discussion (nl) as well.
Place_of_worship:type is used 1800 times, the four most common values being chapel (816), prayer_flags (456), church (167) and shrine (105). Prayer flags (only tagged in and around China) has no current place_of_worship type, the others do as place_of_worship=chapel, place_of_worship=church and place_of_worship=shrine. So I suppose prayer flags should have a place_of_worship=prayer_flag as well.
I am not a regular tag proposer. Do I need to make a full proposal for such a subtag or can we just add those to the place_of_worship=* description page?

If they (e.g. place_of_worship=prayer_flag) are in use, you could add them to the place_of_worship=* description page. However, if they're not yet in use, then you probably shouldn't. Generally, the wiki documents usage and/or approved tagging.
If you're going to propose to approve place_of_worship=* and deprecate place_of_worship:type=* then you'll need to make that much clearer and provide justification. It shouldn't be too difficult seeing as two values for place_of_worship=* have already been approved (place_of_worship=holy_well and place_of_worship=mass_rock). You could then also list some values that will be affected (such as the ones you gave). Approval would then mean you could create those wiki documentation pages. Other Religious Grottos and Caves

Hi! Nice proposal; I haven’t heard of a Lourdes grotto before so I learnt a bit.

How would this proposal work alongside other religious grottos? Wikipedia talks a bit about “Marian” grottos; are they a type of Lourdes grotto? Diacritic (talk) 20:26, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

Seeing Wikipedia (but not being religious myself), I can't really see the difference between "Marian" and "Lourdes" grotto's. The (original) grotto in Lourdes was where Maria appeared and made herself visible to Bernadette Soubirous. I think it's just a matter of speech. IIVQ (talk) 21:48, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Note that not all lourdes grottos are amenity=place_of_worship - some are historic=wayside_shrine

Is it a good idea to have amenity=place_of_worship + historic=wayside_shrine ? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:11, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, the smaller ones (think 30 cm high) are. That would be a good idea for those.

Status

Currently set status is approved. But I cannot find any voting or approval process for this (The link given leads back in a circle). I see that it is actually accepted and it is hardly worth the effort of a proposal. But so far in the wiki the status approved is only given to tags that have actually been voted on. Others can "only" receive de facto. Is there a vote somewhere? Otherwise I think the status should be set to de facto. @IIVQ, Push-f, and Casey boy: --Chris2map (talk) 05:31, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

I've changed the status to "in use". The proposal was here. It then got turned into this page (rather than a new page) without a vote so cannot be listed as approved and I don't think its usage qualifies it yet for "de facto". Casey boy (talk) 12:33, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
