Talk:Tag:shop=doityourself
building=retail
Why it isn't applicable to areas?
Taginfo suggests it's quite common to use on building. Also it's common to use in combination with building=retail.

- It seems this change was done based on a section created below, but it doesn't sound right. I will put the area icon back. --Jgpacker (talk) 19:51, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Might this be better as shop=hardware? --Hawke 22:54, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- I see this as more like Home Depot than your local Ace franchise (which would be shop=hardware). Perhaps it should be clarified? --Cohort 01:20, 15 June 2007 (BST)
I think of this as german OBI, Praktiker and alike. You'll often also get gardening stuff and pieces of wood/stone and alike. shop = diy_store is a bit duplicated IMHO. Maybe better shop=diy or shop=doityourself, the latter for us none native englishman can understand this better :-) shop=hardware is ambiquous, as I personally would think of computer hardware rather than a hammer and some nails. I have some DIY-markets to tag now, so I want such a tag to be approved. :) As a non-native speaker, I don't know how do-it-yourself-stores are called in english spoken language. My dictionary calls it "property market" or "DIY store". So I think shop=doityourself will be the one that's understandable for everyone. Can we open the voting cycle? -- Bwurst 13:01, 24 August 2007 (BST)
- I tag these as shop=diy , Please advise if proposal is decided otherwiseShakespeareFan00 18:12, 26 October 2007 (BST)
- I don't know who the proposer is, so I've taken the liberty of opening voting as suggested. Of the various values suggested, shop=doityourself seems the consensus and will be understood outside the UK. I don't see why shop=hardware should not also be proposed/used for the slightly different category it represents.MikeCollinson 13:06, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know how to mark an Autozone or another shop that facilitates one doing it oneself to ones automobile. It is not "car repair" nor "hardware" nor "DIY home improvement" nor anything that I have seen in the tags proposed. I will eventually figure out how to properly modify the description of "shop=doityourself" to include Radio Shack and other hobbies including shade-tree auto mechanics. -- Jonathan.david.conrad@gmail.com Thursday 01:15, 14 April 2011 (EDT)

onArea status was changed from yes to no
Following One feature, one OSM element, shops that are mapped as buildings are generally mapped with shop=* tags on the building area, therefore this tag makes sense on areas. --Andrew (talk) 07:50, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
- I believe you have confused something. To tag shops on the building area is a very common practice. --Jgpacker (talk) 19:51, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Combination with garden_centre
I know a lot of shops which to me are a combination of doityourself and garden_centre, how can we best address this? (Examples: Raiffeisen and actually most if not all german doityourself brand stores geared towards end users.) Should we tag both? Redefine doityourself to say that it often includes a garden_centre? Creating two nodes may not be beneficial as they are usually one store and duplicating meta data such as opening hours, phone etc. is not beneficial.--Dreua (talk) 13:36, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
