Talk:Tag:sport=cricket nets
Not a sport
A cricket net is a practice net used by batsmen and bowlers to warm up and/or improve their cricketing techniques.
So the sport is still cricket. The should be done with some kind of sub tag. (Edit: Or different leisure=* tag) --AndiG88 (talk) 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Don't think so, many uses of sport=* are mainly used to sub tag leisure=pitch. Playing in the 'nets' although using the same equipment as 11-a-side cricket for many people is as close as they get to full cricket. Think of 'nets' as having the same relation as 5-a-side football to 11-a-side. Only 2 people are required compared with 22 for a full game. The current tag works well, any change would imply sub-tagging all pitches. (PS. It helps to add your nick after comments). SK53 (talk) 12:04, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- But as I said it is still cricket, isn't it? Just because a soccer field is smaller (so your 5-a-side example does not work), a basketball pitch just has one basket or it's a driving range or putting place for golf, we don't change the sport. A sport isn't just what professionals play. And retagging 500 or 5000 nodes isn't that much when you see the sport key is used over 650000 times and is not supposed to be something physical. Or we create a new leisure tag as you pointed out, maybe we could also have something general like practice area. --AndiG88 (talk) 08:36, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- The tag works well, and is used in all areas where cricket is a popular sport, suggesting that the separation of cricket and cricket_nets corresponds to something which people want to map. Any alternative (subtagging of sports or pitches) requires that people know much more about tagging which ultimately makes it harder to map. At present it is supported by JOSM and Potlatch in presets. A plain retagging to sport=cricket will lose information collected by mappers. Anyway we already distinguish between numerous forms of football, bowling, between volleyball and beachvolleyball, and no doubt others. There are a small number of little used tags for 5-a-side too. Tags are for the convenience of mappers, their purpose is not to enforce a semantically rigid ordering of things. I suspect if these were to be retagged sport=cricket_nets would be reinvented because it meets a need, fits roughly in the right place, and makes a distinction which mappers consider significant. It does no harm to {tag|sport|*}} in general. If it's not broken, don't fix it! SK53 (talk) 09:17, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- But other sports also had to deal with that when they wanted to map more details. That's why the sport=* table is still managable and we don't have sport=golf_driving_range, sport=climbing_wall, sport=scuba_diving_spot, sport=table_tennis_table and sport=basketball_basket. If we allow sport=cricket_nets there is no reason to not allow those tags, too. I don't think that is convenient for mappers. The harm comes when we get 3x different sport= tags for every sport. And the other sports you listed are at least to some extent different sports have their own leagues and tournaments, while cricket nets clearly is a practice for cricket. Right now it is working, because the big majority of sports stick to the rule: non-physical tag --AndiG88 (talk) 11:55, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- I agree, I also do not like this tag as it describes a physical feature, the man made construction for the game. If you think the "smaller version" of cricket needs a separate tag (like there is, 9-pin, 10-pin, rugby variants), surely you can use e.g. sport=small_cricket . Together with leisure=pitch, it gives cricket_nets. But cricket_nets as physical feature should be in "leisure", not in "sport". I've only found this page because I came across a popular application that categorized cricket_nets into "man made structures", together with landuses and some other constructions. Or course "cricket" is in sport category. You can bet nobody will find this "smaller cricket nets game" if filtering by category. And yes, the app is arguably right, if the tag is defined as it is. Many sports have practice areas, for instance a hoop can be used for basketball, netball practice where the area may be too small for a full size court or the money is not available. If required then a sport_practice tag can be made and used with all the values that sport has - solves this 'issue'. I have just used it for a half sized basketball court. - See Proposed features/Practice pitch (16 uses), however I'd prefer "sport_practice" because "practice_pitch" sounds like a practice field (i.e., a normal pitch used only for practice). Mrwojo (talk) 00:17, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
- Same problem as above as currently formulated. If a pitch is marked as a practice pitch then consumers still need to query another value to find if the pitch is for nets, or a regular oval. Obviously people have not read some of my comments above: cricket nets are used for pickup games for a small number of players not just for practice. Note also that once upon a time there was a tag=rugby with a subtag rugby=union or rugby=league. Someone changed it and now all are rugby_union or rugby_league, but both games are rugby (obviously ditto for football in its numerous variants, baseball/softball etc), so broadly speaking subtagging of sports died a death. People are now using the key sport for leisure, practice and non competitive things .. such as sport=yoga. It all comes down to the definition used for sport. Warin61 (talk) 07:53, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
Cross post from the cricket discussion page. If "sport=cricket_nets" should not be used, what should be used in its place? Does: sport=cricket, leisure=pitch, and pitch=cricket_nets work? --Casey boy (talk) 09:03, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- I continue to use "sport=cricket_nets". I see no reason to stop. Warin61 (talk) 09:27, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Not Depricated
Until an agreement on an alternative is reached, this tag is not deprecated. Personally I think arguing about whether it's a sport is pedantic.
- Yeah, if someone dislike it - they should propose a viable replacement Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:16, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
