Use this talk page to discuss tagging of winter sports generally. For specific discussions about ski lifts please use Aerialways and for discussions about particular tags consider using the tag page.

Page rebuild

What about rebuilding this page to simply show links toward relevant sections of WikiProject Piste Maps and Proposed features/Tag:route=piste.

Also, the tagging content is duplicate and should be removed, it can be quite confusing, like for snowshoeing that should be tagged with piste:type=hike or route=piste + piste:type=hike. --Yvecai 18:16, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

• I think it is useful to make a distinction between a feature page (such as this one) which provides an introduction to tagging for an subject area (see Category:Features for an idea of the range of feature articles available), a WikiProject pages which focuses on the organisation of people to collect and maintain the data within a subject area (see Mapping projects for a of the range of projects that you can get involved with); finally there are pages about tags, such as Proposed features/Tag:route=piste which provides details of how to use a particular tag (but which shouldn't get into more general tagging discussions). By way of example, Whitewater sports provides a overview of how to tag features that relate to white-water sports, WikiProject Whitewater Maps, is all about who is mapping them around the world and finally there are articles for particular tags, such as whitewater=put_in, which explains how to use a particular tag. For winter sports I created the same distinction, but did extend the scope of this page to cover all winter sports, not just down-hill skiing. WikiProject Piste Maps is now purely about the who and the where of ski runs, this page providing an overview for the tagging and also articles about the individual tags. My recommendation would be to maintain this article as a good summary of the subject and mention all the important tags, and then go through the individual tags to ensure they also cover the use of the tag and link to this page. If this page gets too long it may be sensible to split out a feature page called Downhill skiing. PeterIto 10:23, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
