Page deletion procedure
Does anybody deletes the articles that are collected in Category:Labelled for deletion? Hadhuey 13:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yes. One of the sysop users can delete a page more permanently, and we will get around to it eventually. In the meantime you can just leave it with a label. That's fine. No need to worry about how much database space it is occupying or anything like that (negligible) More important is to check that the page is not linked from anywhere (use 'what links here')
- In fact sysops should be deliberately trying to leave the deletion operation for a period of time, to allow people to raise objections or revert the labelling, in cases where it might be debatable. In many cases it's clear cut, and there's no point discussing it, so we do a 'speedy deletion'. -- Harry Wood 00:55, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, Im a sysop in the german wikipedia (not very active there at the moment). Maybe we install a page "labelled for deletion" to have a place to discuss the deletion. If there is no protest against deletion the page can be deletet after a given period (some weeks?) an does not lay in the category too long. This worked very well in the wikipedia until it became so very big and is a good tool for a "small" wiki like this one. Maybe ist not so important at the moment for these few pages, its just a proposal for the structure of the OSM-wiki. Hadhuey 13:46, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- Isn't the page talk site sufficient for this talk? To find those pages we can use a category. --Andy 13:57, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

- Yeah I don't see the need to introduce more processes on this wiki at the moment. When a page has {{Delete}}, it is effectively deleted. We can see how long a page has been in that state, by looking at the history. Whether it's time to do a proper delete is something which so far has been just left to the sysop's discretion. -- Harry Wood 14:46, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
I was asking everyone to took at simple maintenance tasks, one of which was 'short pages' Wiki maintenance tasks#Fix short pages and I noticed a problem with this, which Tordanik is also point out... The short pages list is clogged with delete labels, at least some of which could ideally be dealt with a bit quicker by those with the power to do so. More importantly maybe, dangling delete labels will also appear in search results.
So far I've paid very little attention to this myself. I can see in Special:Log/delete that User:Uboot occasionally goes on a deleting frenzy and User:Lyx specialises in despamming. Should we do something more systematic? As I said above, sysops should be deliberately trying to leave the deletion operation for a period of time, to allow people to raise objections or revert the labelling, in cases where it might be debatable.
To help with processing them then, I'd like to have a list of delete labelled pages in order of date last edited. Then we can tackle the older ones first. Maybe I'll knock up a scraping php script to do this.

- No scraping required, that kind of query is supported by the MediaWiki API. For example, this is a list of the 50 least recently edited pages in the "Labelled for deletion" category. Some script turning the xml into a neat webpage with clickable links would be nice, but the data is there. --Tordanik 18:08, 5 April 2012 (BST)
- Hey. That's neat! And very useful I reckon. -- Harry Wood 01:02, 6 April 2012 (BST)

I think that lime on red looks terrible. I would like to undo that change again. What is the positive aspect of the colouring? Why was it changed in the first place? --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 20:37, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- I just wanted the reason to be more visible. It's not really visible here. For admins/users who read the reason and don't have to read all the text, especially because the language of the template depends on the page language, not user interface language. What color do you like/prefer? maro21 20:50, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- I changed the color and style, the colors are not so bright now. Is it ok? :) maro21 21:56, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- Looks better. Thanks! --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 22:09, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Why blanking is recommended?
"Replace the entire contents of the page with {{delete|reason}}" - why? Why adding template on top is not OK? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 02:48, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- People should be forced to acknowledge the message, I guess. Otherwise, the readers would skip reading the message when searching for the page contents. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 20:55, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Not sure why it would be problem. People are really unlikely to be actually reading page marked for deletion Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:46, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Requesting deletion of Tag:boundary=timezone was somewhat controversial. People looking for the tag's definition accessed that page for instance. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 22:50, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
