Introduction

A mapping campaign in Twic County, South Sudan was created on the HOT Tasking Manager by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to support the humanitarian and medical assistance to displaced people in the region. The mapping guide provides tips and hints for mapping the buildings in this South Sudan region.

Round Buildings

A round hut, or tukul, in Juba, South Sudan.

Round huts, or tukuls, are traditional buildings made from natural materials. A home for a family may consist of several tukuls which are often in a group or a circle.

Distinguishing a hut from trees, bushes

Huts have a raised point in the middle and can have a distinct curved shadow. Trees and bushes have more ragged shadows. Look closely to see if there are paths or roads, or any surrounding fences, that would indicate a residential area.

Not every round structure is a building!

The satellite imagery may show round structures that might not be buildings. Low walls near buildings can be corrals for animals, or they can be wells or boreholes. Do not map these structures as buildings.
