About

weekly #245

weeklyOSM is the sister project of the German OSM blog (also well known as Wochennotiz). The infrastructure of weeklyOSM was created within the Comenius project "My community and my history in OpenStreetMap" by an international team from five countries and is being consigned, little by little, into the hands of the community.

The aim is to share OSM news in a range of languages in addition to German and English.

We were interviewed by OpenCagedata in June 2016 about our Wochennotiz and weeklyOSM and took the chance to report at length.

How to submit content to weeklyOSM?

How to subscribe?

We recommend to subscribe our RSS-feed in order to stay informed whenever a new weeklyOSM is released. Alternatively, we offer also toots, tweets, emails (in the widget-box on the right side of our webpage) and inform in diverse forums and talk lists

The editorial board of the weeklyOSM is celebrating the ten years of the multilingual edition of this weekly that share the news about the OpenStreetMap World, every week, since 2014. Congratulations for all who contribute to this initiative!

Workflow and Tools

OSMBC

theFive wrote a dedicated content-management system: OSMBC (OSM Blog Collector) back in mid 2015, especially designed for the needs of Wochennotiz and weeklyOSM. This system has been in use since WN 272.

OSMBC allows news articles to be "collected" by the weeklyOSM team. This process previously was done entirely by the German Wochennotiz team. Later English and Spanish translations of Wochennotiz were managed within the tool, but these days increasingly articles are collected in different languages and cross-translated in a flexible workflow enabled by the OSMBC software.

Despite the name, it is not limited to blogs. The team also checks international mailing lists and other channels to include any news that is relevant. The system supports "markdown" formatted text, for each article, and groups them into categories. These are ultimately converted to HTML and put into the wordpress blog each week.

Please note: The weeklyOSM is not only a translated German Wochennotiz, the Czech team shows you how they add Czech related content. Of course each team is free to add language specific issues, moreover they deliver interesting news to the whole OSM community via the German Wochennotiz.

OSMBC wiki

For the OSM editor we run our own OSMBC help wiki.

Sometimes the question arises whether to translate a term or whether it is a technical term in English that is not translated. If the term is translated, there is often the question of which term to use. DE, ES and FR have defined proposals for their respective languages.

Amount of work

For each available language there are about three people needed to provide a level of satisfying quality. Translating is of course a big part, but also proofreading is very important.

Communication

Team members often communicate by email, as this "simply works anytime and anywhere". Since 2016 we use for our internal communication a self-hosted Mattermost on a FOSSGIS-Server https://www.fossgis.de/. Mattermost offers more real time [2] in a convenient way, it runs in a web browser, can be accessed via apps for mobile devices, supports xmpp and irc and is proving to be very efficient.

Want to join us?

We are always grateful for help from mappers (and also non-mappers!). As you can see, each weeklyOSM release includes a lot of recurring work and support would be appreciated. You can really help (even if you have limited time). This could involve translating some parts or helping to proofread articles. This way you will be able to read the news before anyone else does ;-) Email: info at weeklyosm dot eu.

We try to keep the map with our current editors mostly up to date. The weeklyOSM's Map of Fame includes current staff and former editors who have made more than 2000 edits in OSMBC, our CMS. The former editors can be recognised by the number of their edits for weeklyOSM behind their name. Of course, this number is missing for the current editors.
