From September through December 2023, in a group effort coordinated by Joost Schouppe, all the fire stations in Belgium were mapped. OSM is now the best source for geodata about the fire stations in Belgium!
When there are changes to the stations, the Mapping guide below may come in handy.
Context
We at NCCN (National Crisis Center) need data about where the fire stations are. There is no authentic source for this, and the data that is available isn't perfect. When we look at some government data, we can clearly see that OSM is not perfect either. Can you help us make the data in OSM better so we can use better data in our applications?

Mapping guide
Main stations:
- please map them as polygons if at all possible. Avoid having both a polygon and a node!
- make sure the outline is tagged with amenity=fire_station
- building=fire_station is welcome. If it is within an amenity=fire_station, put as much info as possible on the amenity and do not duplicate on the building as well. Only when the fire station consists of a single building and no land around it, add amenity=fire_station to the building as well
- add the name=* of the station
- add the operator=* and operator:wikidata=* of the station (use the names of the zones as indicated in the table below)
- add the operator:type=* of the station:
- operator:type=emergency_zone for regular stations
- operator:type=military for stations operated on military domains
- operator:type=industrial for stations operated by large companies on their own terrains
- operator:type=airport for stations on an airport
- ...
- add contact details like phone, email, website
- add access roads
- add fire_station:type=main_station for stations that are higher in the hierarchy (poste in French, post in Dutch) and fire_station:type=local_station for smaller stations (PASI in French, voorpost in Dutch).
Use the websites in the tables below to check which stations currently exist. If the website does not contain info, consider emailing them to ask for an address list. There is also a federal list available here.
Also check for objects that are mapped as a fire station but are not the places from which a fire brigade operates! If you don't know the proper tag for them, please just report them in the list at the end of the page.
Fire brigade offices:
The fire services sometimes have office spaces without actual operational facilities. These aren't as important to know, but if you do encounter them, make sure they are NOT mapped as amenity=fire_station and add it as office=government + government=fire_service. Do NOT add these tags to amenity=fire_station. Do add an operator tag as described above.

- Civiele bescherming/protection civile: sometimes tagged as amenity=fire_station. Former examples: 401428594
401428594, 255888443 255888443, 259612616 259612616. These were retagged as amenity=emergency_service, which is exactly what that tag is for. operator:wikidata=Q1895669 was also added.
