PAGE IN PROGRESS

Accessibility mapping in Boqueirão is a project to import sidewalks and pedestrian crossings generated by the SidewalKreator plugin, in a neighborhood of Curitiba, Brazil.

Goal

To map all sidewalks and pedestrian crossings on public streets in the Boqueirão neighborhood, as a part of the initiative to map pedestrian accessibility in Curitiba.

Workflow

The import will be done in stages, covering the entire project area:

Stage Changeset tags Schedule Progress
1. Preparing the streets used to create sidewalks and crossings #AcessibilidadeBoqueirao December 2023 in progress
2. Sidewalk and crossing generation and import #AcessibilidadeBoqueirao #SidewalKreator #Import January 2024 planned
3. Data validation #AcessibilidadeBoqueirao #Validation January 2024 planned
4. Manual mapping of sidewalks in public spaces #AcessibilidadeBoqueirao January 2024 planned
5. Field mapping of surface and curb tags (StreetComplete tags) February and March 2024 planned

Import Data

The source of all imported data is OpenStreetMap, as the plugin generates new geometries based on ways mapped with the highway=* tag.

Ways used to generate sidewalks and crossings: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1ENe

Data Preparation

The first stage will be updating the streets used to generate sidewalks and crossings, by improving the quality of the lines (correcting misalignments and outdated tags), tagging sections where there are no sidewalks (with sidewalk:right=no or sidewalk:left=no) and where the street width is exceptional (using width=*). The plugin is already designed for the OpenStreetMap data model, so it doesn't require further preparation. The geometries and tags are based on the method of mapping sidewalks as a separate way and the guidelines for pedestrian navigation.

Data Merge

???

After the actual import changes, a manual validation stage will be conducted throughout the project area, checking for possible gaps and errors (such as overlaps, displacements and non-existent geometries).

Post-Import

In addition to the imported sidewalks and crossings, public spaces separated from streets (such as squares and parks, with footways that won't be generated automatically) will be mapped or updated manually.

Another subsequent mapping will be of surface=*, smoothness=*, kerb=* and crossing=* tags, for specifying accessibility conditions. In order to provide up-to-date and accurate information, the mapping will be done in location using StreetComplete.
