Announced in February 2024, the Pedestrian Working Group, organized by OpenStreetMap U.S., is composed of volunteers who are collaborating to develop guidelines and tools for detailed pedestrian infrastructure mapping.

Get Involved!

The Pedestrian Working Group meets via Zoom on every third Tuesday of the month from 3:00-4:00pm EST. To join those meetings, fill out this OSM US Working Group registration form.

Ongoing discussion also happens on the OSM US Slack. Relevant channels include #sidewalks, and the private channel for the Pedestrian Working Group.

Guidelines

Tagging guidelines in the form of a quick-start guide and full schema are being developed, with monthly meetings being held to discuss and refine details.

Draft versions of the guide and schema are available to view and comment on.

Tools

Tools to assist with pedestrian infrastructure mapping are being developed, such as:
