Foundation/Local Chapters/United States/Pedestrian Working Group

Announced in February 2024, the Pedestrian Working Group, organized by OpenStreetMap U.S., is composed of volunteers who are collaborating to develop guidelines and tools for detailed pedestrian infrastructure mapping.

Guidelines

Tagging guidelines in the form of a schema are being developed, with monthly meetings being held to discuss and refine details.

A draft version of the schema is available to view and comment on.

Tools

Tools to assist with pedestrian infrastructure mapping are being developed, such as:

• A JOSM preset for tagging features such as sidewalks, crossings, and curbs.

• Visualizations using Overpass Ultra for curb types, tactile paving, and sidewalk tagging on roadways.
