International Open Data Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about open data and encouraging its use across various domains. To celebrate Open Data Day 2025, the OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Wikidata communities are working together to improve the integration of structured geographic data. This collaboration encourages participants to enhance OSM by adding Wikidata tags to relevant map features, ensuring better data consistency and connectivity. Contributors can help by verifying and linking place-based entities, refining metadata, and improving the quality of both platforms. Let’s bridge OSM and Wikidata to create richer, more accessible open data.
The theme for Open Data Day 2025 is "Open Data to Tackle the Polycrisis". This theme focuses on addressing some of the most pressing global issues, such as poverty, inequality, violence, conflict, and climate change, by leveraging open data.
Goals
The mapathon plans to
- Create and improve data on Public Services & Accessibility
- Improve the map data about hospitals, healthcare centers.
- Improve the map data about Fire stations, Police stations.
- Enhance the data on schools, universities, and public services centers.
- Create and improve Renewable Energy-related data
- Expand information on solar, wind, hydroelectric, and bioenergy projects.
Getting started with contributing
Create an OSM Account if you haven't one.
- Visit OpenStreetMap and click "Sign Up" and follow the steps to register.
- You can contribute from desktop or mobile device. There are lots of tools available for contributing.

Update the nearby places
- Use iD Editor, Every Door or any tools to find nearby schools, universities, libraries, government offices, etc., that needing updates.
- Add / update any missing / wrong information such as mame, address, website, and other relevant tags.
- Check if government buildings, metro stations, hospitals, and public spaces have accessibility informations.

- Use OSM ↔ Wikidata matcher tool to link the data between Wikidata and OSM.
