The lgbtq=* tag indicates the level of LGBTQ+-friendliness of a feature.
This tag is typically added to leisure features or amenities, such as shops, bars, nightclubs, gyms, bathrooms, or healthcare facilities.
Information must be verifiable. Only places which openly indicate themselves to be LGBTQ+-friendly should be tagged as such.
How to map
Add the lgbtq=* tag to the feature.
Use the lgbtq:*=* namespace to add additional details if applicable.
Consider adding lgbtq:signed=* to indicate whether the information is signed on-location, or source:lgbtq=* for websites or other sources.
Values
lgbtq=primary
Location which caters to a predominantly LGBTQ+ audience, whether by design or overwhelming convention.
- A gay bar
- amenity=bar + lgbtq=primary
- A Lesbian bar
- amenity=bar + lgbtq=primary + lgbtq:women=primary
lgbtq=welcome
Location which has some verifiable indication that LGBTQ+ people are welcome. Examples of signage may include stickers, flags, posted messages, or statements on the feature's website.
Pride flag | HRC sticker |
- shop=clothes + lgbtq=welcome + lgbtq:signed=yes
- A shop with a pride flag in the window
lgbtq=only
This feature is exclusively (not just predominantly) for LGBTQ+ people and does not allow others. Mostly used on subkeys to also imply the inverse.
- club=student + lgbtq=only
- An LGBTQ+-only student club
- amenity=nightclub + lgbtq=primary + lgbtq:men=only
- A nightclub which caters to LGBTQ+ people and only allows men to enter. (Implies lgbtq:women=no)
lgbtq=no
This feature indicates that it does not serve LGBTQ+ people.
This tag is likely to be uncommon in places where this type of discrimination is illegal, but may be added if it is verifiable by survey of a bigoted sign or similar indication.
This value should not be used to tag features which are subjectively judged to be unwelcoming to LGBTQ+ people.
- amenity=place_of_worship + lgbtq=no
- A place of worship which denies entry to LGBTQ+ people
