Usage on power features

Usage on rail features

On many railway=* features, this key indicates the name of the railway line in conjunction with branch=*. However, the more widespread tagging convention uses name=* and operator=*. name=* is also a tag for name of object in general so it is a clearly preferable tagging scheme. In some cases it may be necessary to create a route relation with route=railway when the branch, line and railway service have different names.

Usage on bus features

Particularly common in Germany is to find line=* on bus stops. Possibly a synonym to route_ref=* (and by extension, the deprecated lines=*).

Usage on other features

  • line=yes ‒ this tag has no meaning and is generally redundant. See closed way for details.
If you know places with this tag, verify if it could be tagged with another tag.
