You can improve the bus stops data by Surveying and Merging with OSM data

National Public Transport Access Node (NaPTAN) and National Public Transport Gazetteer (NPTG) are UK official datasets for bus stops and places which the UK Department for Transport and Traveline have offered to make available to OpenStreetMap project.
Discussions relating to the import process will take place on talk-transit.
Discussions relating to use, verifying and merging should take place on Talk-GB

The datasets

NaPTAN

The National Public Transport Access Nodes (NaPTAN) dataset contains details of some 350,000 public transport access points in Great Britain including bus stops, railway stations, tram stops and ferry terminals. This data includes a name, geocode, official code and other information useful to the project. The data set includes both the physical points of access to transport (Platforms, bus stops, airport gateways, etc.), the interchanges (Stations, Airports, Ports, Clusters, etc.) and the entrances to the interchanges from the street or public thoroughfare - the model distinguishes between these various concepts, all of which may be relevant for different representations of a "stop". NaPTAN uses terminology based on the European CEN [Transmodel] standard. See also Wikipedia entry on Naptan.

NPTG

The National Public Transport Gazetteer (NPTG) dataset is a gazetteer of some 50,000 place names in the UK with a name and geospatial coordinates. These places are arranged in a hierarchy so that, for example, it is known that Camden is in London. Again there is additional information in the data set that is useful to the project.

Import process

The original import process is described in detail on the NaPTAN/Import page.

More recently NaPTAN data has been imported for the Aberdeen area as detailed on the NaPTAN/Aberdeen page.

Tagging

NapTAN data in OpenStreetMap can be used for public transport routing software to associate timetable data with OpenStreetMap data, giving to-the-platform accuracy on the ground for street routing.

In order for the data to be matched correctly, the following association is advised.

Stop points

NaPTAN Stop point type Description Corresponding OSM element
AIR, FTD, RSE, TMU, BCE, LSE Station entrance node railway=subway_entrance
GAT, FER, RLY, MET, BST, LCB Access area
FBT, RPL, PLT, BCQ, BCS, LPL Bay / Pole nodewayarea public_transport=platform, highway=bus_stop, highway=platform, railway=platform, aeroway=gate, man_made=pier, man_made=quay
BCT Bus stop on street nodeway public_transport=platform, highway=bus_stop, highway=platform

Stop areas

NaPTAN Stop area Description Corresponding OSM element
GAIR, GFTD, GRLS, GTMU, GBCS, GLCB Primary Area relation public_transport=stop_area

Licensing

The NaPTAN data has been released openly on data.gov.uk https://beta-naptan.dft.gov.uk/ http://data.gov.uk/dataset/naptan with the UK Open Government Licence which is compatible with ODbL (provided we credit them as contributors. See Contributors#Department for Transport - NaPTAN_data)

During original discussions the department offered us a single one-off bulk import to OpenStreetMap under the required licence with a plan to review the results and possibly offer future updates, but now it's just open data.
