This page is a guide on how to tag signals of legal tramways in Germany as defined by BOStrab. This include actual tramways, light rail networks and subways. For normal and narrow gauge railways as defined by EBO resp. ESBO, please refer to OpenRailwayMap/Tagging in Germany instead.

Preamble

Although the BOStrab defines various signals which are more or less universally used, each operator can also use its own signals in addition to those as defined by BOStrab. Standard signals are prefixed with DE-BOStrab: but in order to differentiate local systems, the country prefix DE- and an abbreviation of the operator is used instead. For example, for Stuttgart it's DE-SBB:, for Hamburg it's it's DE-HHA: and for Hannover it's DE-UESTRA:.

BOStrab

Main signals (Hauptsignal, H)

H 0 A red light Stop
BOStrab H 0.svg
H 1 A green light Go
BOStrab H 1.svg
H 2 A green light over a yellow light Go with limited speed
BOStrab H 2.svg

It's important to know that main signals can also be used as distant signals. If they're purely used main signals, one use railway:signal:main:*, otherwise if it also serves as a distant signal, use railway:signal:combined:*.

For example, Go with limited speed can mean on some systems, that the next signal shows stop which makes it a main signal with characteristics of distant signals.

Main signal without characteristics of a distant signal

This section does not apply to Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Hamburg und Hannover which use a different signalling instead.

Main signal with characteristics of a distant signal

Distant signals for main signals (Vorsignal, V)

V 0 Two yellow lights Stop expected

V 1 Two green lights Go expected

V 2 A yellow light over a green light Go with limited speed expected

Distinct from driving signals (Fahrsignale) which show dots and letters as light signals.

Driving signals (Fahrsignal, F)

F 0 A horizontal white bar Halt
DFStrab F0.svg
F 1 A vertical white bar Go allowed only straight forward
DFStrab F1.svg
F 2 A diagonal to the top right pointing white bar Go allowed only to the right
DFStrab F2.svg
F 3 A diagonal to the top left pointing white bar Go allowed only to the left
DFStrab F3.svg
F 4 A white dot Stop expected
DFStrab F4.svg
F 5 A white triangle which points downwards Fahrt freigegeben unter Beachtung der Abbiegeregeln nach § 9 Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung
DFStrab F5.svg

Those signals can also appear as signs and not as traffic signals. Those signs are tagged with railway:signal:main:form=sign instead.

Signals which permit signal priority are often depicted as a glowing A and are tagged as railway:signal:main:PT_priority=requested;off.

Speed limit signals (Geschwindigkeitssignal, G)

Announcement of a speed limit (G 1a/b)

This signal announces a speed limit (change to a slower speed). The number in the sign times 10 equals to the speed limit.

G 1a A yellow triangle which points downwards with a white border and black number. If the space is limited, the triangle can point upward instead.
BOStrab G1a.svg
G 1b A yellow glowing light.
BOStrab G1b.svg

Start of speed limit (G 2a/b)

The given number times 10 equals the allowed speed.

G 2a A yellow rectangular sign with a white border and black number.
BOStrab G2a.svg
G 2b A white glowing number.
BOStrab G2b.svg

End of speed limit (G 3)

BOStrab G3.svg

Increment of speed limit (G 4)

BOStrab G4.svg

A white rectangular sign with a black border and black number.

Protection signal (Schutzsignal, Sh)

Forced stop (Sh 1)

BOStrab Sh1.svg

Denotes places where one has to stop if driving on sign. A yellow square with a horizontal stripe.

Protection stop (Sh 2)

BOStrab Sh2.svg

Continuing is invalid. A red rectangle with a white border. Equal to Sh 2 on heavy railways.

Emergency stop (Sh 3d)

BOStrab Sh3d.gif

The train is to stop immediately. A red blinking light or many red lights below. These come up especially in subways.

Ringing (Sh 4)

BOStrab Sh4.svg

A white rectangle with a black L.

Border sign (Sh 6)

Tram sign de Sh6.jpg

Denotes the border to which the train can drive. Ein rot-weißes Zeichen oder entsprechende Markierung im Gleisbereich.

This signal isn't placed on the tracks but instead at its physical location.

Stop sign (Sh 7)

BOStrab Sh7.svg

Denotes the location where the front of the train should stop. A black rectangle with a white H, a white rectangle with a black H some related markings on the trackbed.

Switch signals (Schaltsignal, St)

Signal contact (St 1)

BOStrab St1.svg

A signal contact has to be confirmed at the St 1 location. A blue square with a white S.

Weichenkontakt (St 2)

BOStrab St2.svg

A point control has to be performed at the St 2 location. A blue square with a white W.

Ausschalten (St 3)

DFStrab St3.svg

The current has to be disabled from signal St 3 onwards. A blue diamond with a black and white border and a split U.

The meaning is comparable to El 1 of heavy railways.

Einschalten erlaubt (St 4)

DFStrab St4.svg

The current can now be enabled from signal St 4 onwards. A blue diamond with a black and white border and a connected U.

The meaning is comparable to El 2 of heavy railways.

Stromabnehmer abziehen (St 5)

DFStrab St5.svg

The meaning is comparable to El 4 of heavy railways.

Stromabnehmer anlegen (St 6)
