Volcanic threat from the Nevado del Ruiz volcano

Rationale

Volcano activity level changed to ORANGE LEVEL or (II): ERUPTION PROBABLE WITHIN DAYS OR WEEKS on March 30.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano is the second most active volcano in Colombia. In 1985 there was a very catastrophic eruption that destroyed the town of Armero. Since the end of March 2023, movements have been detected. It is considered to erupt again.

Timeframe

The tasks started on April the second, and the tasks will be active until April 30th.

Tools and Data Sources

The prefered editor is JOSM.

For the rivers, we are using the IGAC layer Drenajes dobles y sencillos, that contains a rough idea of the course and the names of rivers and streams. To draw the course, different imageries can be used, because the high mountains are normally with clouds in different sources. The imageries are aligned in the area.

For the roads and constructions, the Maxar layer is used.

The activity will be coordinated from HOT OSM's tasking manager:

Participants

Any other volunteer interested in this activation.

Measuring our Success

The area will be reviewed by validators from HOT. The area is not very big, and the volcano does not have a lot of details. Lowlands could be different, and for this reason we are mapping only the threaten area.

Training/Instructions

The training is remote, from LearnOSM, but also, the Telegram chat.

Post-Event Clean Up

The validators could reject tasks to improve the mapping.

Results

At the end of the process, the resulting map will be shared in social networks and other media.
