Organised Editing/Activities/Accessibility in Sarria
Accessibility Mapping in Sarria (Lugo)
Rationale
The goal of this activity is to map access to disabled people to different objects in the town of Sarria, province of Lugo (Galicia - Spain). We will map wheelchair access to different kind of amenities (government, health, parks, places of worship, transport stations, banks, etc.) and shops. We will also map side-walks and crossings access, both to wheelchair and blind people.
This is an activity that is part of an Innova-Lab project of the IES Gregorio Fernández secondary school, in Sarria. Mapping will be coordinated by one teacher (Rafael Ávila Coya) with long experience in OSM, and performed by students of 3rd and 4rd course of ESO (secondary education), ranging from 14 to 16 years old on average. Students will be trained in accessibility matters, in surveying with FieldPapers, and in basic editing with iD. All their surveying and edits will be supervised by the coordinator. While surveying, the students will go in groups of 2 or 3, and the coordinator will be on the ground at all times, going from one group to another, solving problems, questions, etc. Same for editing, that will be done in a computer lab in the school.
Contact
You can contact Rafael Ávila Coya at ravila@edu.xunta.gal with any questions, or message user edvac. Any changeset comment will be replied directly by the coordinator, or by the students.
Community Consultation
We contacted the community using the OSM Galicia Telegram channel.
Hashtag
We've asked our students to use the hashtag #accesibilidadesarria with their edits.
Timeframe
We're expecting activities to begin in April 2025, and continue until the end of the school year in June 2025, or before.
Tools and Data Sources
We'll be using FieldPapers for on-the-ground surveying, and iD for editing. Supervision and correction will be done with either Vespucci or JOSM.
Participants
Coordinator
Participants (students)
adri96911 (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
AitorM (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
There will be more students participating, and we'll add their user links to this page as they join.
Measuring our Success
We'll get stats of the work done: % of objects with accessibility info added to them and quality of the information.
Training/Instructions
We've introduced students to FieldPapers and iD in our activity.
A guide for mapping can be found in this page (in Galician).
While surveying, the coordinator will be always on the ground, moving from one group to another, solving problems that may arise.
Post-Activity Clean Up
All edits will be supervised and, if needed, corrected by the coordinator, in no more than 48 hours time. Any serious damage would be promptly reverted (JOSM reverter).
Results
We'll post some results here once we've finished the mapping activity. The results will be also presented at the town hall of Sarria, during an official plenary session of the city council, towards the end of the school year.
