Department Store
A department store sells a wide variety of durable goods for the home. Large and small appliances, furniture and kitchenware may each have sections or departments of the store. Clothing departments may be further divided by customer and use, such as Infant and Toddler or Outdoor clothing. The departments will continue, perhaps with jewelry and cosmetics or sporting goods.
The Project of the Week is to add local Department Stores to the map.
Tagging suggestions
A department store may be represented as a point or an area in OpenStreetMap.
Required tags
The only required tags for a department store are
- shop=department_store
- name=*
- building=retail # for a department store building outline. Building = yes is also correct but building = retail carries more context.
Recommended tags
Department stores tend to be large and may serve as a landmark for surrounding objects. It may be well worth the extra time to provide more detail for a department store than for a smaller shop.
Add addressing information for the store.
Add building entrance locations for large department stores. A building entrance is a node on the building outline way.

Results
These graphs show the number of department store points and polygons in the OpenStreetMap data base. The graphs are updated about once per hour. Graphs are a few days behind as of 24 March 2011 and should catch up shortly.
