Proposal

This proposal is for creating a tag agroecology=* to be added to places, farms or shops, dedicated to agroecology. The concept definition is described on the FAO website:

"Agroecology is a holistic and integrated approach that simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable agriculture and food systems." and Wikipedia pages [1] [2].

Applies to nodes, areas and relations.

Rationale

The reason for the proposal is the lack of a specific tag for identifying map elements related to agroecology.  As expressed in the description of the proposal, there are several elements that are identified with agroecology from individual farms, shops or marketplaces, among others.

Therefore, having a specific tag on OpenStreetMap to identify such sites will help engage the community associated with agroecology-based projects to interact with the map. In the same way, it will make it easier to search for map elements that are related to agroecology. The data contributed using this tag could be used by public agencies and research centers to group different types of places identified by agroecology. It might also be of interest to farmers to find supplies, sell products or get advice. Individual consumers or their associations could find products and farmers involved in alternative agriculture.

The related tag organic=* is complementary. It is defined as: “A tag to describe if a shop offers organic and/or fair trade products”. While organic products can come from farmers who practice agroecology, although the term "organic" refers only to items produced on farms that have received organic certification. For now, this tag is only used in shops or restaurants and can be extended to tag farms.

In many places of the world, certification for organic agricultural labels carries a major financial cost for many family farms. As a result, farmers’ communities are developing their own labels and participatory guarantee systems (PGS) to certify their agroecological practices [3], [4].

On this basis, creating this tag is intended to fill a gap in the tagging schemes for places that explicitly advertises itself as “agroecology”, “agroecological” or “agroecology farms”, “agroecology shops”. Places can also have obtained an “agroecology label” either through a third party or a participatory guarantee system.

Tagging

Definition: Tag agroecology=* is proposed to represents places, shops or farms, that follow the principles and practices of agroecology. The tag should be used as follows:

  1. In the simplest case: If the place explicitly describes or advertises itself as "agroecological" or "agroecology", add the agroecology=yes tag to the map element.
    1. The default is agroecology=no. There is no agroecology unless the place has an explicit label. Use in case a shop or restaurant does not offer agroecological products.
  2. Alternatively, for places having a certificate for the agroecology practices, add then the agroecology=certified tag to the map element.
    1. If the certification method is described in the source used by the mapper, the tag and suffix agroecology:certification=* can be added, with the following values:
      1. agroecology:certification=third_party, for labels or seals received from companies or government agencies dedicated to evaluating and certifying agroecological practices.
      2. agroecology:certification=participatory, for labels or seals obtained from participatory guaranty systems.
    2. If the organization who provide the certification is known, then the agroecology:operator=* tag should be added.

Elements tagged: The proposed tag could be added to nodes Node, areas Area and relations Relation.

Additional tags used in combination: place=farm , landuse=farmyard, amenity=marketplace, shop=convenience, shop=agrarian

Examples

Example Image
A farm dedicated to agroecology:
Huerta agroecológica
Agroecology farm
A shop selling agroecology products:
Despensa agroecológica
Shop selling agroecology products

Rendering

Since this tag is used in combination, it does not require a different rendering than the main tag.

Features/Pages affected

The place=farm, shop=convenience or amenity=marketplace pages would need to be updated in order to add the new tag agroecology=* to sections "Useful combination" or "See also". The organic=* page would need to be modified to add details to map farms labeled as organic.

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This must be a value, not a key! There are hundreds of such labels, we can't have a separate key for each. Having details under agroecology:something is ok. But the base key has to allow for other labels as well --Datendelphin (talk) 06:10, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. It is important to differentiate between "organic" and "ecological". They do not necessarily mean the same thing, depending on the scale of production or the target market. --Rodolfovargas (talk) 13:16, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I agree with the attribute “agroecology=*”, but not with the contradictory “agroecology:operator=*” for the certification body, which is likely to lead to misunderstandings. Logically, “agroecology:operator=*” should refer to the farm practicing agroecology. The attribute for the certifier should be “agroecology:certifier=*” or similar. --Dafadllyn (talk) 17:05, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
