Rationale
Provides a way to tag landing and takeoff for free flying aircrafts with additionnal related amenities.
- free flying in this context means : Foot launched aircraft, without motorisation.
Examples of such aircraft are :
- Hanggliding
- Paragliding
- Swift
- Rigid hangliders such as Atos VR
It's intended to tag only "official" landing and takeoff ( as almost any large enough field could do ! ).
By official, I mean suitable sites for landings and takeoffs where you will usually find windsocks, information signs, parking, human maintenance and maybe first aid kits.
However, an optionnal tag might be used to describe an unofficial but suitable and allowed landing or take off.
Applies to
nodes / area / linear
As written there : Key:sport, Since this is a non-physical tag it should be combined with one of these (physical) tags if used on an area : (If it is a node, it is okay to use it alone.)
leisure=piste landuse=grass ...
Tag, Values and Usage
Defining the practice sites :
Tag | definition | Illustration / Example |
---|---|---|
sport=free_flying | This is the main tag for a free flying practice site | |
free_flying:site=takeoff | A free flying takeoff | Paragliding only takeoff |
free_flying:site=landing | A free flying landing area/point | Paragliding landing place |
free_flying:site=towing | A free flying towing takeoff and landing place. | |
free_flying:site=training | A free flying safe place for training (large field with regard to usual takeoff site, without obstacle, low slope ending flat). | |
free_flying:official=yes/no | The default is "yes", set it to "no" if the owner of the place has expressly allowed free flying practice, eventually only in emergency case, but no maintenance or windsocks or parking is expected. | |
free_flying:paragliding=yes/no | This site is suitable and allowed to paragliders. (no if it is either not allowed or not suitable) | both a hangglider (left on picture), and paragliders (right on picture) take off |
free_flying:hanggliding=yes/no | This site is suitable and allowed to hanggliders. (no if it is either not allowed or not suitable) | both a hangglider (left on picture), and paragliders (right on picture) take off |
free_flying:rigid=yes/no | This site is suitable and allowed to rigid hanggliders. (no if it is either not allowed or not suitable) | |
free_flying:site_orientation=N,NE,E,SE,S,SW,W,NW | Take off orientation |
Other allready existing tags that might be usefull
- network=* to record the free flight sport federations (FFVL in France, FIVL in Italy, …)
- operator=* maintainer's name (In France that would be the local Club)
Tag | definition | Illustration |
---|---|---|
free_flying:school=yes | A free flying school (paragliding/hanggliding/...) | |
free_flying:repair=yes | A free flying repair shop (paragliding/hanggliding/...) | |
free_flying:shop=yes | A free flying resseller shop. (You can buy paragliders, equipement, harnest, ...) | |
free_flying:club=yes | A free flying club (paragliding/hanggliding/...) | |
free_flying:tandem=yes | A place where you can pay to have a tandem flight with professionnal pilots |

- I approve this proposal. -- Djam 16:30, 19 October 2010 (BST). I understand Nickvet419 opinion about using existing tags, but I don't share it. Official free flying landing sites have quite nothing to do with other official airfields. Ok for gliders (airplanes without motor) but not for free-flying aircrafts.

- I oppose this proposal. -- Reason; I think the official registered areas should fall under aeroway=aerodrome as in places with winsocks and additional airfield type tools. Doing some reserch, could these also be considered Gliderports? aeroway=gliderport. I just don't think these area need an seporate Key. A sport=air_sport [1] aircraft_type=user_defined tag would work for unoficial areas with a combination of landing=yes/no takeoff=yes/no and other descriptive tags. --Nickvet419 14:21, 20 October 2010 (BST)

- I approve this proposal. -- Approved. What about a speedflying (in addition to paragliging/hangliding)? I don't agree at all with Nickvet419's comments. Boran 22:07, 20 October2010 (BST)

- I approve this proposal. -- Approved. Totally disagree with Nickvet419's comments, who clearly doesn't know much about paragliding and airsports in general. Dex2009 09:34, 21 October 2010 (BST)
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerodrome read the first line and tell me how this is different?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_sports and does this not incorparate any and all airsports?? This is why it is good practice to use wikipedia to help name new tags because on wikipedia the terms and definitions have usually already been discussed and worked though. I only made suggestions to help simlify something that has yet to be mapped using a tagging shceme already in place, not only for ease of mapping but also rendering. --Nickvet419 18:26, 21 October 2010 (BST)
- I approve this proposal. -- As a paraglider i would love to map flying sites and i agree that paragliding is not an aerodrome or something like that. Paragliding is mostly and hopefuly more freedom. janus4 23:15, 22 October 2010

- I abstain from voting on this proposal. -- On one hand I agree with Nickvet419: paraglider or passenger jet, they both fall under the definition of aircraft and thus the key aeroway=* would be appropriate for starting and landing places. On the other hand I understand that the paraglider and hangglider pilots are an (OSM) community in themselves, and except for the different zones in the airspace they don't share much with the other aircrafts, thus an namespace of their own seems justified too. But then, I would also expect to learn such things as the surface (grass, rock, compacted or loose snow (ski start!), ice, grating) and a difficulty rating for a starting and landing place. I'd like to know if there is a shuttle service between landing and starting place, at what times does it run and who can I call for some information. --Shernott 13:45, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
