Proposal
This key describes the position of a bicycle parking facility, for example on the sidewalk, on the carriageway (lane) or on a grass verge. It makes a distinction between different traffic areas/spaces/zones in which a bicycle parking facility can be located. This allows special evaluations of the allocation of public and private space or to take facilities at certain locations into account in data analyses (e.g. facilities on the carriageway when evaluating street parking).
The intention of this tag is not to describe the accessibility of infrastructures. Therefore see access=* or bike_ride=*, that indicates in particular a bicycle parking lot near a public transport stop.
The key name and values are similar to fire_hydrant:position=* which is approved since 2013.
Originally introduced as bicycle_parking:position=*, the proposal has since been simplified to just position=*, as this attribute is also suitable for features other than bicycle parking, e.g. bike rental stations, mobility hubs or other parking facilities like for small electric vehicles.
Tagging
Add position=* to describe the position of a facility or street furniture, e.g. to objects tagged with amenity=bicycle_parking, amenity=small_electric_vehicle_parking, amenity=bicycle_rental or amenity=mobility_hub. Note: For fire hydrants, fire_hydrant:position=* is currently established for a similar meaning.
The following categories are recommended as values for this key. Pick the most specific value from the list of recommended values and fall back to a more general values if nothing fits well.
In the pedestrian traffic area:
- position=sidewalk – On the sidewalk, meaning on or next to the area intended for pedestrians next to a road.
- position=grass_verge – On a green stripe, e.g. between different traffic areas (where you usually don't walk on; see [road verge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_verge]).
- position=kerb_extension – On a [kerb extension https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curb_extension], a section of the sidewalk that is extended onto the carriageway, usually near crossings.
- position=pedestrian_area – In an area intended for pedestrians (which, however, cannot be understood as sidewalk or any other of the listed values).
In the roadway traffic area:
- position=lane – On the (side of the) lane/road resp. in the area of the carriageway for motorised vehicle traffic, usually on parking lanes.
- position=street_side – In a parking bay, see also parking=street_side.
- position=shoulder – On the shoulder of the road, i.e. a paved or unpaved section beside the road not normally meant to be driven on.
- position=traffic_island – On a [traffic island https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_island].
- position=parklet – On a [parklet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parklet], meaning a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street.
Off the street:
- position=park – In or near a park.
- position=school_ground – On or near a school ground.
- position=playground – On or near a playground.
- position=parking_lot – In or near a parking lot.
- position=driveway – On or next to a driveway.
- position=private_property – Fallback value for features located on a (private) property, e.g. the grounds of a private institution or at the access in front of residential buildings.
- position=public_property – Fallback value for features located in the public space. Choose a more precise sub-category if possible.
- Note: Use access=* to describe the accessibility of a bicycle parking stand. In particular access=private if the bicycle stand is not freely accessible or access=customers, if it's only for customers of a specific facility or access=permissive if it is freely accessible but belongs to a private property.
Examples
![]() |
Bicycle stands installed on the carriageway/traffic lane: amenity=bicycle_parking + position=lane |
![]() |
Bicycle stands installed within the grass verge: amenity=bicycle_parking + position=grass_verge |
![]() |
Bicycle rental station on the sidewalk: amenity=bicycle_rental + position=sidewalk |
Bicycle stands on a private property campus: amenity=bicycle_parking + position=private_property + covered=yes + access=* |
