Proposal
The intention of this tag would be to properly map these areas where plant nurseries exist. A plant nursery grows plants, much like a farmer would grow food. Plant (as opposed to human) nurseries are a common market garden feature of the English landscape, and I assume other nations as well. The proposal is pretty simple... show the name label, and possibly shade them or render a little plant icon.
Note, this tag is not intended for:
- Trees that are grown food food production, as a tag for it exists: landuse=orchard.
- Greenhouses, it is strictly meant for growing plants in open land, not inside a greenhouse, for these purposes landuse=greenhouse_horticulture is used.
- Vineyards, where grapes are grown for a variety of purposes, including the production of wine: landuse=vineyard.
Rationale
The concept of a tree nursery is difficult to map by means of the current tagging possibilities for these reasons:
- The tags landuse=forest or natural=wood cannot be used, as they are intended for effective forests. If you look in the landscape, the difference between forest and tree nursery's is very clear.
- The tag landuse=orchard cannot be used, as it is limited to food production.
- The tag landuse=farm can be used, but conceptually it doesn't feel right as it is not used for food production (crops) or holding animals.
- The tag shop=garden_centre is too specific to be used, i.e. it represents that shop that sells the plants themself, while this tag is intended for the area where they grow the plants that are later on sold in the garden centres.
Due the appearance in the landscape, the feature of a tree nursery is distinctive enough to have its own tag for mapping purposes.
Examples
Examples of areas where there are quite a few plantnursery's:
- Houtvenne, Belgium: Arbor, Boomkwekerij Van Dyck
In general in the complete world there are numerous tree nursery's, at various locations.
Tagging
The tree plant would belong to the landuse=* group, as it describes how an area of land is used.
Tag | Description | Notes | Photo |
---|---|---|---|
landuse=plant_nursery | Defines that the land is being used as a plant nursery. | The purpose of applying this tag must be for land that is used to produce trees, any other plantations that produce food must use landuse=orchard. | |
name=* | The name of the feature, if applicable. | ||
operator=* | The name of the farmer/company which owns the plant nursery. | ||
plant=* | The generic type of plant that is grown. | Possible values: tree, herb, bush, grass, vine, fern, moss, green-algae | |
genus=* | Scientific name of the genus (first part of the scientific name) | Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus for details. | |
species=* | Scientific name of the species (popularly known as the Latin name). Please use the namespaces for local languages. | Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species for details. |
Tagging Examples
A plant nursery owned by Arbor which grows white oaks:
- landuse=plant_nursery
- operator=Arbor
- plant=tree
- genus=Quercus
- species=Quercus alba
- species:en=White oak
Rendering
The tag must be rendered as an area (). It is suggested to be rendered as follows:

Opinions after vote
- I oppose this proposal. - in my opinion it is a bad idea to introduce yet another landuse. In this case landuse=farmland, farmland=plant_nursery would be preferable (landuse=forest. forest=tree_nursery for tree nurseries). Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:53, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
