Status: deprecated

exclamation mark

This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: man_made=street_cabinet + street_cabinet=postal_service.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

amenity=relay_box is an in use tag similar to amenity=post_box for mapping postal boxes which are used by mail carriers to store mail between deliveries. This tag can be found on the map distinguishing Canada Post relay boxes from standard post boxes, for example.

"Relay box" is also used as a synonym for street cabinet, but these are tagged with man_made=street_cabinet, and this tag has been discouraged for mapping street cabinets. (See this external discussion from 2014 on the topic https://tagging.openstreetmap.narkive.com/0UnTfowx/feature-proposal-street-cabinet-voting#post2)
