A street cabinet hosts many sorts of equipment, often technical stuff, while being of a size or construction that workers cannot enter themselves.
Thus they are different from technical buildings where humans can walk inside.

Many different kind of street cabinets can be seen all around the world, often on sidewalks.
This tag allows mappers to add them correctly in OSM, even with a lack of information about pavement accessibility and what is really hosted inside.

How to map

Tag a node or a area as man_made=street_cabinet.
Cabinets tagged with node can be described with width=*, height=* and length=* values. Mapping them as an area implies width and length on the ground, height=* can still be added.

Associated tags:

  • utility=* The utility activity the street cabinet is associated with,
  • street_cabinet=* for supplementary roles that aren't utility.
  • ref=* The reference of the cabinet, often visible on it,
  • operator=* The name of the company operating the cabinet.

Detailed mapping for cabinets

Many more mapping indications are given below that can be added based on additional information surveyed.

A street cabinet is commonly a box with vertical hinged doors installed in the street.
It contains technical stuff and utilities to run several devices like traffic lights, telephone lines, water meters, containers, etc.

Even if the tag contains the term street, man_made=street_cabinet applies to all kind of facility cabinets where workers cannot enter to work, located directly in the street or not. A few other values had been discussed (like man_made=technical_cabinet) but did not cover cabinet sorts as well as street_cabinet.

man_made=street_cabinet has been introduced to provide a scheme which globally suits needs of urban landscape mapping. In many fields of knowledge, some other tags can give many more precise information. See the examples section below.

Tagging

Tagging example

A street cabinet should be tagged as follows:

Key Value Comment Recommendation
man_made street_cabinet The street cabinet should be mapped as a node. In exceptional cases, such as when a cabinet is very large and has a pedestrian accessibility impact, it may be mapped as an area. mandatory
utility <utility name> The utility activity the cabinet is part of. Not all cabinets are involved in utility networks, use it only if applicable recommended
street_cabinet <cabinet type> The functional type or role of the cabinet is now utility=* (See Legacy street cabinet categories section below.) recommended
ref <reference> Abbreviation / number of the cabinet as publicly visible. ref=* is used by default when no specific key is available (see ref:FR:gdo=* as an example) recommended
width <cabinet width> The effective width of the cabinet optional
length <cabinet length> The effective length of the cabinet optional
height <cabinet height> The effective height of the cabinet optional
direction <cabinet azimuth> The northing azimuth of the "length" side of the cabinet optional
colour <cabinet colour> The colour of the cabinet optional
manufacturer <cabinet manufacturer> The name of the cabinet manufacturer (often visible as a logo) optional
model, manufacturer:type <cabinet model> The name of the cabinet model (as seen in manufacturer brochure) optional
operator <operator> Name of the company that operates the cabinet or what's hosted inside. optional
hinge vertical or horizontal Direction of cabinet's door opening. optional

Legacy street cabinet categories

Prior utility facilities proposal, street_cabinet=* was used to document kind of nature of street cabinets.
Cabinets dedicated to utilities are now described with utility=* as many other features.

Remaining street_cabinet=* values are still here for now, during the transition toward utility=* and could be removed afterwards.
Corresponding street_cabinet=* values are flagged as possible synonyms of utility=* ones.

Key Value Comment
street_cabinet postal_service A street cabinet designed to host pending letters or other postal stuff before they go on local delivery (known as a postal relay box).
street_cabinet traffic_control A street cabinet mainly designed to host traffic light automation systems and/or traffic control systems such as movable barriers which have a direct impact on traffic flow.
street_cabinet traffic_monitoring A traffic management device is mainly in charge of vehicle counting. It differs from street_cabinet=traffic_control since it can't impact on traffic directly.
street_cabinet transport_management Transport management cabinets often host automation systems to allow public transportation installed on dedicated paths (metro, tramways...) to work.
street_cabinet waste All cabinets hosting containers for waste and recycling which are not a public amenity, i.e. those for collecting the waste per individual house. In many cases they are locked for private access.
street_cabinet cable_tv A street cabinet which is hosting cable CATV lines amplifiers or splitters. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=television instead.
street_cabinet gas A street cabinet use to host devices for urban gas distribution. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=gas instead.
street_cabinet power A street cabinet use to host devices for electricity distribution. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=power instead.
street_cabinet street_lighting Street lighting switches and cables can pass through some cabinets all along the streets. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=street_lighting instead.
street_cabinet telecom A street cabinet which is hosting telephone lines amplifiers or connection points. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=telecom instead.
street_cabinet water All cabinets hosting pipes and valves directly. It includes not only cabinets for drinkable water but utility water or sewerage too. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=water or utility=sewerage instead.
street_cabinet water_management All cabinets designed to host water management devices like automation or probes but no water pipes. It includes not only cabinets for drinkable water but utility water or sewerage too. Deprecated by Proposed_features/Utility_facilities. Use utility=water or utility=sewerage instead.

This list of possible values can be completed ad-hoc by users who do not find any matching one here.
We aim to find the most versatile values and a discussion is taking place on the Talk page to discuss them before they get widely used.

Accessibility

Streets and more specifically pavements accessibility may be impacted by cabinets installation. Some tags may help to define how this impact can be reduced or avoided. The best example is to compare pavement total width with the cabinet width to know if wheelchairs can pass normally. More information about dimension measuring by looking directly on common keys' page.

Please note street cabinets are only a small accessibility factor of global pavement paths. They are often seen as obstacles and should be mapped as such. More specific information may be obtained by observing them first hand.

Key Value Comment
sound Any kind of sounds emitted by the cabinet A street cabinet can emit sounds which are useful to blind people
heat yes/no A street cabinet can emit heat

Disambiguation

Such a global tag may collide and should interact with some other keys used on OSM.
The proposal has highlighted some similar values and is intended here to give directions as to the correct usage of man_made=street_cabinet
You can and should discuss this disambiguation on the Talk page.

Monitoring stations

man_made=monitoring_station was approved prior to street cabinet proposal and both can actually collide since they are located in the man_made=* namespace and a monitoring station is often composed of one or more technical cabinets. At this moment, mappers should choose how they want to document such features by using man_made=monitoring_station or man_made=street_cabinet + street_cabinet=*. The usage of any monitoring:*=* key isn't affected and users should continue to use them to indicate what kind of monitoring is done, even on monitoring man_made=street_cabinet features.

Traffic signals

traffic_signals=controller is similar to man_made=street_cabinet + street_cabinet=traffic_control but they don't collide with each other and can be used on the same features.
Since the first one isn't widely used, it should be progressively replaced as proposed.
In all cases, monitoring:traffic=* can be used when traffic is monitored by any means.
