The charge point tag is used to map the individual physical charging devices (sometimes also known as "dispensers" or "stalls") at charging station sites, like fuel pumps at fuel stations for combustion vehicles. Each charge point usually has one or two connectors or cables for charging electric vehicles.

How to map

First map an area area around the charge points and associated parkings lots and tag it amenity=charging_station. Then create a node node at each physical charge point belonging to the charging station. Add the tag man_made=charge_point to the node.

Tags associated with the site (group of charge points), such as name=*, brand=* and capacity=*, are added to the amenity=charging_station area. Tags which are specific to each charge point, such as socket=* information, are added to the man_made=charge_point nodes. See example below. If all charge points at the site are equal it is not necessary to tag the socket=* information on man_made=charge_point but only on amenity=charging_station.

If there is only one charge point at the site then it is usually not necessary to map man_made=charge_point separately. Just tag the socket information to amenity=charging_station.

This feature is optional. It is usually not necessary to map each charge point at charging station sites. Note that only amenity=charging_station will be rendered on maps and will show up in search results.

Please also see comments and examples in the wiki for amenity=charging_station.

Tags to use in combination

The most common tags for man_made=charge_point objects:
Key Description
man_made=charge_point Feature tag.
ref=* The reference number or code used to identify the charge point, if available, for example "2126". Often displayed on the charge point and used in apps. Some charge points have two or more reference numbers, which may be tagged with a semicolon, for example "2126A;2126B".
socket:<type>=* The number of sockets/cables of the type <type> that can be used at once at the charge point, for example socket:type2=2.

Not needed if all charge points are identical (put tag on the amenity=charging_station object instead).

socket:<type>:output=* The power (in kW) that can be sourced from a single socket/cable of the type <type> at the charge point, for example socket:chademo:output=50 kW.

Not needed if all charge points are identical (put tag on the amenity=charging_station object instead).

Other optional tags:

  • ref:EU:EVSE=* - EU-wide reference number for charging infrastructure. Record the ID(s) for the EVSE(s) at this charge point using the format <Country Code>*<CPO ID>*E<Charge Point ID>, where the E indicates that the ID relates to an EVSE . Use semicolon if more than one EVSE per charge point.
  • socket:<type>:voltage=<volt> - The voltage of the respective socket.
  • socket:<type>:current=<ampere> - The current of the respective socket.
