A stupa is a Buddhist dome-shaped structure with a spire on top originally built to contain relics. Many traditions, architecture forms, and philosophies followed it as it spread through Asia. Stupas are a common sight in Buddhist temples these days, and they come in a range of shapes, sizes, and purposes. Some are relic-filled, while others aren't. A set of stupas may be built in a systematic manner to fulfill an architectural concept for a large temple complex.

How to map

Set a node node or draw an area area along its outline. Add the tag man_made=stupa. If it's fitting, other tags like historic, tourism, building, name, and so on may be used in combination.

Useful combinations

  • For a historically significant stupa, add historic=monument if it is large enough to be seen in the city landscape. For smaller ones, use the appropriate historic=memorial or historic=tomb. A historic tag should not be added to a general stupa with little historical importance.
  • For the massive monument, which consists of several stupas on the same platform that is accessible and large enough to walk on comfortably, tag man_made=stupa to every stupa on the platform. The entire monument structure should be tagged with historic=monument, and the platform outline should be tagged with barrier=retaining_wall, or some other appropriate tag.

Some local or traditional words used in some places, such as chedi, dagaba, zedi, pagoda, and so on, do not imply that it is not a stupa.
