A natural history museum is a scientific institution that maintains and displays collections of animal, plant, fungi and mineral specimens. Educational exhibits and demonstrations are available for guests to view, and academics or professionals may be granted access to the museum's extensive collection for research purposes. Historical records of local flora and fauna along with ecologic, geologic, climatologic, or paleontological findings may be included.

While they can share some characteristics with history museums, local history museums, and archaeological museums, natural history museums have a notable prominence of (previously) living organisms, natural material, and scientific tools and documentation in their exhibitions. See natural history.

How to map

Set a node node at the center of the feature or draw an area area along its outline.

Tag it with tourism=museum + museum=nature.

Adding features

Most museums contain features that can be represented by tagging nodes on or within the area of the building. Use local knowledge to add nodes with entrance=*, amenity=toilet, amenity=cafe, office=security, shop=gift, or exhibit=science to make a more detailed map of the museum.

For mapping floor plans and multi-level buildings, see Simple Indoor Tagging.
