This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: highway=piste or route=piste.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

This value is undocumented so far, and it’s hard to give it a meaning (‘yes’ is not a ‘type’).
Below are suggested existing tagging scheme that may be used instead :
- Small connection between pistes, or between a piste and a lift
Here piste:type=connection can be used, or just prolonging the existing nordic or downhill pistes.
- Small areas around baby-lifts
What about piste:type=downhill or piste:type=downhill;sled and piste:difficulty=novice, area=yes ?
- Landuse paving
If really one is into landuse paving, landuse=winter_sports is as good a tag as any.
