New version of Android Market gives information on Android version required; for example see here [1]: you can find requirements on the right. So if an application is published on the market, you can found information you need. Danilo.schembri 01:59, 6 April 2011 (CEST)

The oldest Android version still receiving security support from Google currently is Android 10[2] and I'd guess that all apps support such a recent version.

Also for some apps the required Android version varies per device, so there might be no easy answer. --Push-f (talk) 02:00, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Running Android apps on a Desktop PC

Here comes a draft about running Android apps on a desktop PC: (maybe in cases you want to smell the flavour of it when you don't own an android device yet)

• Download one of the available PC emulators or virtualizer like VirtualBox, Qemu, VMWare, Bochs, etc
• Download an Image of Android for X86 PC systems, like from www.android-x86.org as an iso-file
• Run that android version and choose LiveCD modus or install modus (recommended to install a virtual SD-card)
• Do testing whether your running Android system has access to the Internet, e.g. via the built-in browser
• Be aware that it seems not possible to access the official Android Market by Google.Inc
• So try one of the alternative app markets like XXX or XXX
• Try to download and install OSM related apps that are offered by direct download of an apk-file

(There is also the android device emulator within the official SDK of Google, but this seems to be quite slow in comparison to a real virtualizer. Are there any benchmark apps to get more details about this?)

General things to solve:

• How to emulate a GPS signal in a virtualized Android system?

An Emulator does not run on a PC (Personal Computer) but on an Operating System. VirtualBox runs on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. There are a number of already installed Android images that should run on any VirtualBox above those 3 systems out "of the box". Look for "virtualbox android disk image". Download one, create a new Virtual Machine, say that you use the downloaded image as disk and there you boot Android. I have successfully run one above Ubuntu, but I sure don't recall which. --Papou (talk) 19:52, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Apps that use OpenStreetMap for reasons other than navigation

All the apps here are primarily navigational tools. Is this an appropriate section, or is there a place, or shouldn't there be a section that lists all of the dozens (hundreds?) of apps that use OpenStreetmaps data for other purposes? e.g. the Wikipedia app, which uses Mapquest tiles for its 'Nearby' feature.

Maybe there should be such a list - we have a list of OSM Internet Links (see especially the German version), and something like that could exist for software. They should not be mixed with the others, though. The currently listed applications are interesting when you want to "use OSM" on your Android in some way. You won't install the Wikipedia app to "use OSM", you install it to "use Wikipedia". --Tordanik 21:49, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Screenshots

Several of the applications listed here show iOS or Windows Phone screenshots because we don’t have screenshots of the Android version on this wiki. I don’t personally have an Android device to get decent screenshots for these galleries, so I’d greatly appreciate help from anyone who does. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 19:53, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
