Talk:Gym / Fitness centre
What sport?
If you want to tag the gym with a sport tag, what tag should you use? sport=fitness seems natural but that page links to a Wikipedia page that states ”Fitness and figure competition is a class of physique-exhibition events for women.”. Surely men use gyms too. Another alternative is sport=exercise but it is not documented. What do you think? Didrik 20:18, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
sport=fitness, IMHO. Something B (talk) 14:07, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
British English
One of our basic tagging rules is to use British English for tags, so all those ...center should be ...centre --Dieterdreist 01:02, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Agreed. At the moment this page is showing those tags as an illustration of the tagging mess, but hopefully it won't suggest to mappers that it's a good tag to use. Should we remove it from here d'you think? -- Harry Wood (talk) 14:01, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
What about leisure=sports_centre?
I usually tag gyms as leisure=sports_centre.
--Dobratzp 01:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- There is now a column with leisure=sports_centre and amenity=sports_centre ...also sport=sports_centre which seems like a very bad idea for a tag, and yet somebody somewhere has used it! Maybe we should have a column for the american spelling sports_center just for completeness of our illustration of the tagging mess! -- Harry Wood (talk) 13:59, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

- Yeah correlating with common names for known gym/fitness centres is a good idea. In the UK there's "fitness first", "pure gym", "virgin active". Anyone know how to run the numbers on those in the UK -- Harry Wood (talk) 00:58, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
- local aera knowledge: One possibility is to use these Overpass APIquery http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/db2 --User 5359 (talk) 05:38, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
Proposal made from the numbers of usage
As I read the numbers, it is very clear that amenity=gym (491; 213; 1) and sport=fitness (291; 94; 0) are the most used tags. amenity=fitness_center is a wrong tagging because of AE. I propose to use the leisure=sports_centre, sport=fitness. I could give several examples where leisure is used much similar than amenity is used: leisure=miniature_golf, leisure=ice_rink etc. In this context leisure=sports_centre is a very powerful tag. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cracklinrain (talk • contribs) 16:35, 19 December 2012
- The page for amenity=gym has good arguments against its use. Nicolas17 07:16, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
- leisure=sports_centre has a very clear definition, and it is clearly a wrong tag for a standalone "fitness centre". The sports_centre tag is reserved for places where very different kinds of sport are located together, just like shops are located together at a shopping centre tag as shop=mall. For example the "Olympic villages" erected in a new town every 2 years for the Summer/Winter Olympic games are the high end of the scale while an area with a public swimming pool and a soccer pitch would be the low end. - In my opinion a commercial fitness centre is included in the definition of sports_centre: Very often you can do there aerobics, fitness, jogging and squash, too. But what if there is only a single sport supported? --Cracklinrain (talk) 13:48, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Most commercial fitness centres I have seen offers neither squash nor jogging (= low speed outdoor running). Just machine-aided fitness and fitness-focused floor training (such as aerobics, zumba). Jbohmdk 12:48, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Jbohmdk, gyms are often (not always) much smaller than my idea of a sports centre. I recently noticed that the standard layer showed leisure=sports_centre at level 15, which is too early. See [1] for an example. Eurogym, Pro Corpore, TAKEWONDO, YOGAlounge are all small gyms, certainly not more than 400 m² ... inappropriate for this zoom level. Bobo1030 (talk)

- That's a bit of an old discussion. Obviously the idea of looking at usage stats is important. The issue we have battled with (and were battling with back in 2012) was that amenity=gym was a bad tag for several different reasons, and yet it was the most used of the top-level tag options. Happily the usage stats are shifting! (See below) -- Harry Wood (talk) 01:49, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
leisure=fitness_centre is winning
I'm delighted to see that amenity=gym usage stats have dropped since I last looked at this tagging (and since I went to a lot of trouble to justify labelling it as "don't use")
The front runners are now leisure=fitness_centre versus... the combo leisure=sports_centre + sport=fitness
...although amenity=gym is not out of the running yet. What I mean by that (and this is important) is that we need to retain a lot of the information and justification on this page in order to explain to mappers why that tag needs to die (Tag:amenity=gym (Don't use) links to sections on this page) We need to remind people to move off that tag. And there may well be mappers who still think it's a good tag. Point them to this info! Killing off a bad tag is a very difficult thing to do in OpenStreetMap, and it requires patience.
I wasn't sure which of the other two options I preferred myself. I think on balance I am starting to prefer leisure=fitness_centre (because I think this thing deserves a top-level tag) so... I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it myself, but it was really puzzling me that nobody else had created the english version of that page properly. Thanks to User:Math1985 who's just done it! And stats-wise I think this top level tag is beating the combo tag option (bit difficult to tell)
So I think this is all moving in the right direction (hurray!), and maybe one day we can blow all this away, as this massive tagging mess recedes into history. We're not at that point yet though. Like I say, it's important to still be laying out the options and justifications on this page. Rather than doing anything sudden, we should gradually shift the language on this page, as the usage stats gradually shift. I've done so just now to demote amenity=gym some more (since the stats now back this up)

Other physical excercise venue tags..
I wasn't sure what the table on the article page wanted to include so I'm just adding a note here that IMO also other physical excercise / sports venue tags could be added to this discussion. At least where the sports venues are somehow "fitness center" type such as martial arts, yoga, etc practice places. So, consider adding at least amenity=dojo and sport=yoga (or rather the tags that are used to tag yoga place -- AFAIK nothing very well established, most are probably found in the table, http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/sport=yoga ). --JaakkoH (talk) 18:41, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
