Talk:Key:ramp
I have created a new sub category of ramp called
ramp:elevated
this describes a ramp which is elevated off the ground rather than built up of solid material underneath it. It has been used on 2 ways 23433026 and 23422025. In the case of these 2 ways, the ramp a wheelchair accessible wood and metal trellis supported by steel towers leading up to an observation tower.
- ramp:* tags describe that a way has a ramp, not that the way is a ramp (which, from your description, seems to be what you are trying to tag). They also cannot be used to tag multiple attributes of a single ramp.
- If a way is tagged highway=footway + ramp:elevated=yes + ramp:wheelchair=yes, then it is a footway with an elevated ramp and a wheelchair ramp (not an "elevated wheelchair ramp") next to it. --Tordanik 21:00, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Side
Shouldn't the tag describe on which side the ramp is?
Instead of writing ramp=yes, wouldn't it be better to writeramp=left or ramp=right?
- I would also propose that 21:27, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
How to tag for separately mapped ramps
"Ramps that run physically separated (e.g. separated by a fence, height difference or wall), should be drawn separately. " - should ramp=no or ramp=yes used in such cases? Or maybe ramp=separate? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:47, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- With the currently available values, that would be ramp=no. A ramp=separate value may be worth considering, though. --Tordanik 13:00, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hmm I noticed that this runs contrary to the tagging scheme established with the ramp:bicycle=*, ramp:stroller=*, ramp:wheelchair=* keys that were introduced 2014 or so. The tagging scheme is like that and not like ramp=bicycle (etc.) because it should allow tagging that a steps has both for example a bicycle ramp but also a wheelchair ramp. So, consequently, the recommendation should be to tag ramp:wheelchair=separate etc. rather than ramp=separate because the wheelchair ramp might be separate but that does not mean that the other ramps, if any, are separate. I'll add a note to the page. Edit: On the other hand, technicalities aside, the only ramp that can realistically be separate ramp is the wheelchair ramp. If there is a wheelchair ramp, it is extremely unlikely that there will be another ramp on the "main" steps, so I didn't add the note to the page after all to not further complicate the scheme. --Westnordost (talk) 22:35, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
"This is for ramps that are included in the stairway itself. Ramps that run physically separated (e.g. separated by a fence, height difference or wall), should be drawn separately." - What if there is a ramp but there are no steps? Offhand, I can think of one such (in an area I surveyed recently), where there is a drop of around 1 metre and a ramp connecting the two levels. Not enough room for both ramp and steps, so ramp only. The wiki implies that ramps are an adjunct of steps and are not found in isolation. Is it sensible to have a footpath with just ramp=yes? Ought I to add steps=no? Ooh, just thought of another one: entrance to a building which has steps from one direction and a ramp from the other direction (they're 180 degrees apart, not adjacent). - You could use highway=footway together with incline=* (which can be just incline=up or incline=down if you don't know the slope). —M!dgard [ talk ] 19:29, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Currently the combination highway=footway + ramp=yes has been used 4600 times: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/SZT - this compares to over 33,000 uses of highway=footway + incline=up or incline=down http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/SZX --Jeisenbe (talk) 11:42, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- In my eyes, highway=footway + ramp=yes would even be wrong, because ramp=yes is an under-tag for highway=steps, to show that there is a ramp (which is not separately mapped). But some people confuse this with adding the information that a footway is physically a ramp, but ramp=yes does not mean that.--Lukas458 (talk) 10:26, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
Sure hope that I can just use "ramp=separate" and not put in the ramp just yet because I'm in a hurry. Jidanni (talk) 03:28, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Does ramp:stroller=yes imply ramp:bicycle=yes?
If ramp:stroller=yes, does that mean that ramp:bicycle should automatically be tagged to "yes"? --Westnordost (talk) 13:21, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- In theory stroller ramp may be unusable for bicycles - for example there may be handrail on both sides of stroller ramp, with no place to fit cyclist pushing a bicycle. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:08, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
- I think it's safe to assume that in the large majority of cases, a stroller ramp can be used by bicycles, so we could decide that if ramp:stroller=yes then ramp:bicycle=yes is assumed and doesn't need to be tagged. Only if it isn't usable for bicycles it should be tagged with ramp:bicycle=no. Same for wheelchair ramps: assume it can be used by strollers and bicycles too. Only when for instance the curves on a zigzag wheelchair ramp are too tight for a bicycle, it should be tagged with ramp:bicycle=no --Rhhsmits (talk) 05:21, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
ramp:stroller vs stroller
How does ramp:stroller=* relate to stroller=* etc.? It seems to me this pretty much has the same meaning. --Westnordost (talk) 14:45, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
- stroller=no may appear not only on steps but also on other objects. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:stroller mentions some examples, but it seems that given extreme range of strollers explicit width tag would be far better Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:05, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Does ramp:bicycle=yes (or ramp:*=yes in general) require ramp=yes
Presently the wiki states that for 'ramp=yes' "There is a ramp. You should also specify the type of ramp, see below". If I want to tag a bicycle ramp (ramp:bicycle=yes), does this mean I must also add ramp=yes? (And to avoid confusion due to ramp=yes, probably also ramp:everything_else=no). That is how I interpret the wiki at the moment.
Personally I would say that ramp:bicycle (or ramp:stroller or ...) should be sufficient, without needing to add ramp=yes. Usage stats also show that ramp:bicycle is only accompanied by ramp in 1/3th of the cases, suggesting that ramp:* alone seems sufficient. If this is indeed the correct behaviour, then the wiki page probably should be updated to make this more clear. --Famlam (talk) 4 March 2021 (UTC)
