Jungle of QA services
In the jungle of all QA services, some are (arguably) better than others, how could we add some sort of popularity ? and is that interesting ? sletuffe 14:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Template for translation
IMHO the tables should be templates since the translated versions lag behind. With this change untranslated services are stil displayed in englisch. --Jojo4u (talk) 08:04, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- Are you planning to model this after the Map Features templates? Imo those are hard to expand, which might mean that fewer users can add entries. --Tordanik 11:22, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Title of QA-section
With an edit in 2011 the title of the QA section was changed from "==Quality Assurance==" to "==Quality Assurance - OSM Tool==, is this really useful? I would like to change it back. What happens to eventual links to this section, will they be updated? Jojo4u (talk) 21:45, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
Sunsetting this page
I find List of OSM-based services problematic for several reasons:
- The scope is too broad and not well defined. They are using OpenStreetMap says sites should be listed there that don't fit in the sections of List of OSM-based services but the sections are also not well defined. The General section is used as a general catch-all and the difference between General, Services and Interaction is unclear. Some services are listed in multiple sections further complicating maintenance.
- The page duplicates several other articles (e.g. 3D#Viewing, Android#Applications, Routing/online routers, etc).
- It's difficult to find what you're looking for, because of several reasons:
- The page mixes global and regional maps in a very poor way. People wanting global maps have to sift through regional maps, and people wanting maps for their specific region also cannot easily find them.
- The table rows are generated by a uniform template (Template:Service item) which disallows any informative section-specific columns/comparisons.
Wanting to address these problems I created two new pages: Worldwide web maps and Regional web maps.
So I would suggest that we:
- Update the intro of this page to direct people to these new pages (as well as platform-specific pages such as Android and iOS).
- Direct people to Worldwide web maps rather than List of OSM-based services by e.g:
- Updating the Maps redirect to redirect to Worldwide web maps instead (makes more sense because List of OSM-based services also includes non-map services such as geocoders).
- Linking Worldwide web maps instead of List of OSM-based services on the Main Page.
What do you think about this? --Push-f (talk) 17:42, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
