Routable Maps

I just installed the 07-05-2010 version of Dave Hansen's United States map, but it doesn't appear to be routable. Can anyone else confirm this? --Ohazi 13:11, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Publishing my map

At the moment I have a map of Espirito Santo (Brazil) published on the Internet, I try to update it from time to time, but the interval is very random. Latest Map Found Here. My plan is to make regular updates for whole of Brazil, and maybe each state as well. My conversions are done in mkgmap --Skippern 01:57, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the list

Here I pasted together some changes which were proposed some time ago by various users but not implemented yet

Add additional columns: proposal: name of data provider, map size Drbobo 16:45, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Next step would be to add some more columns. I'd suggest Map Styles (noname/cycle/hiking) Contours (yes/no) and Generator (mkgmap/cgpsmapper). I don't know a lot about the conversion process, but I believe that mkgmap and cgpsmapper are the two currently available generators? Justcameron 01:52, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
I tried this. It looked okay on my 1280x1024 screen but in a smaller window it made the rows too tall and the table unweildy. Justcameron 12:32, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Should we include a column on the download table which FID is used for each map? It would be very useful to know which FID are in use. This would prevent people creating maps with colliding FIDs. A list of FIDs used by commercial maps would be useful, too. --R kleineisel 08:57, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Removing old entries

I propose that if a link is down for a week it is removed. Justcameron 01:52, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

As there's no objections, I removed a couple of old entries Justcameron 15:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I propose that if a provider's data is more than 3 months old and a comparable file is available at another provider, the unmaintained one is removed. Justcameron 01:52, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I think the emexes Link should be removed. I dont expect the website to go up again. --chris66 08:11, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I removed some more entries:
  • Malaysia / Nyem - deadlink
  • Nepal - not updated for 2 years
  • Mapomatic - not updated for 15 months, superceded by maps of talkytoaster+richard.dev.osm
  • east africa - deadlink
ChrisB 10:04, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I re-inserted the east africa entry. The original link was dead, but finding the correct one was a matter of 2 clicks.
Please keep in mind that a lot of people profit from those maps. And old maps are sometimes better than no maps at all. Chaos99 11:17, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

UK

As a trial I've setup a (basic) script to generate routable maps for the UK using data from the Geofabrik mirror and mkgmap with the --route option. The files are available for download from http://osm.pointdee.co.uk and consist of individual files for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as a combined England, Scotland and Wales image file

Brazil

I am looking into making an automated script to download actual data from OSM, make various types of map binaries, and publish them on either my own website, or through a secondary host. I first need to have some working scripts, but it looks like I can have that in the near future. If so, I can have monthly updates of each Brazilian state + the largest metropolitan areas, and a complete Brazil map. (At least that is my goal). If anybody have any ideas of hosting (shell hotel, etc) please drop me a line. --Skippern 18:38, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Cleaning up discussion

I would like to suggest to clean up the discussion page. Most if the entries here are over a year old and are not active points of discussion any more.

looks like nobody seems to have any objections... -I will wait another week until Nov 29th 2010 and then I will clean it up (unless anybody objects).
I cleaned up a lot of the old entries which where solved or some of which were just questions by users on how to install the maps (which nobody answered and which (I believe) is the wrong place to ask here.
I think the discussion page now looks a lot cleaner and it will be easier to follow-up on more recent topics blaueva52h7jk 19:02, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

non-latin characters

We should add a column about handling non-latin characters (Kyrillic, Chineese etc.), because these can't be read by all Garmins nor by all users. Handling might be:

  • leave names original.
  • show only names with name:en
  • show transliterated names
  • others?

Are there any maps that go the other way round, transliterating western characters to Kyrillic or so? Basstoelpel 11:10, 8 July 2011 (BST)

Local names must be shown. ابوبندر العصم (talk) 18:05, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

Available Map ID's

There needs to be an overview of (un)available Map ID's. If someone wants to publish his/her Garmin map to the public, it would be nice that there are no conflicts with already existing maps. I have created a wiki page and need some help to fill this table:

OSM Garmin ID

Adding new map publishers

I wonder if there are any rules to follow for new map publishers to be listed on the download page (e.g. considering the page containing the coordinated the map ids). Any hints are much appreciated.

P0lar (talk) 22:38, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

No hints received since 9 months. Really? Does no one care / review who is on the download page?

P0lar (talk) 18:13, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

Merge installation instructions off this page

Currently there's a screen full of text at the top of this page which duplicates instructions elsewhere e.g. here: OSM Map On Garmin#Installing the map onto your GPS We should do a bit more linking and bit less duplicating of instructions on this page. -- Harry Wood (talk) 19:41, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

When to delete map providers

The Mapmania domain expired more than a month ago and now redirects to spam sites. How long do we wait to give a provider chance to get back up and running before deleting them from the download page? I found Mapmania one of the best, but at some point we have to assume they will not be back.Davidbstanley (talk) 08:44, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

If it is dead for month then it should be deleted - though contacting operator may also done. Domain is almost certainly lost now Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:50, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
I have deleted Mapmania from the page. Davidbstanley (talk) 10:10, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Where are map downloads for e.g. Arabic listed

And what devices are supported? What mkgmap flags should be used? This is a fairly common question (see https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/arabic-garmin-osm/76285/4 and https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/fenix-7-pro-iran-map-problems-with-font/108092 ). I think that this page used to include details of which pre-made downloads supported Unicode maps, but seems not to any more? SomeoneElse (talk) 09:00, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

My experience for nüvi and etrex+oregon for germany, old and new devices:

perfectly for nüvi:

car: https://www.openmapchest.org/maps/germany-austria-and-switzerland/

car: https://blogs.kleineisel.de/b2evolution/index.php/osmmap/

bicycle: https://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/germany (use car setting, but avoid unpaved if you dont want them suggested)

for etrex+oregon:

Peace be upon you. How do I download a map (UTF-8 maps) on a Garmin GPS device?

Peace be upon you. How do I download a map (UTF-8 maps) on a Garmin GPS device? ابوبندر العصم (talk) 13:06, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Create a folder on the sd card, copy the xyz.img file onto it, rename it into gmapsupp.img, put the sd card into your garmin device. When it starts it loads map automatically. Check selected map: when map shows, press menu, setup map, select map, have a look which map is loaded. good luck --Automat7 (talk) 13:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
