Talk:Tag:emergency=ses station
Problematic tag
A State Emergency Service for Disaster Response exists in nearby all countries, with the name Civil Defense (Defensa Civil in Latin America) or similar names, so this value can and should be used everywhere, and Australia is just an example. --Federico Explorador 20:20, 30 May 2012 (BST)
- The tag is problematic for worldwide use, since it takes a country-specific acronym (SES) that is not self-explanatory and not understood elsewhere. --Polarbear w (talk) 10:15, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
I will try to improve this label the description page, since I believe it can be valid for more countries than Australia. --Mnts (talk) 22:13, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
- It does not help to improve the description page, since the value itself is badly chosen for worldwide use. --Polarbear w (talk) 22:16, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
The tag was introduced by an individual mapper for tagging SES stations in Australia, using the Australian acronym in the value. Thus it should not be used internationally as it is not universally understood. The attempt to define international usage on the description page by user Mnts was moved here below for further discussion. A discussion was started a while ago on the tagging list which revealed that the organisational forms differ from country to country. --Polarbear w (talk) 09:32, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
As an Australian mapper I agree this tag is problematic due to it being Australian specific, I feel we should instead use something like emergency=disaster_response_station and then in Australia add the operator=State Emergency Service tag to further help identify disaster response stations operated by the SES.Aharvey (talk) 06:37, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes though I'd prefer emergency=disaster_response which is more concise, and should be applied to the station. In the tagging list discussion in April 2017, office=disaster_response was proposed in addition for administrative/planning/management offices that do not have the equipment there. --Polarbear w (talk) 11:33, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in Germany currently use the scheme amenity=emergency_service + emergency_service=technical. Would that cover the Austrialian case? --Polarbear w (talk) 16:01, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
- There is an existing tag for emergency=water_rescue_station and given the diverse nature of at least the Australian SES, I'd suggest a renaming to emergency=land_rescue_station as it would be easy to verify on the ground. It would also resolve confusion in mapping marine SES units to the water_rescue_station rather than SES_station which spans both. So the land_rescue here means a rescue service where the main mode of transport of the responders involved is a motor vehicle, bicycle or on foot. Alex Sims (talk) 04:46, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
International organisations / Naming across countries
Collected by Mnts and Chrabros, 16 Apr 2017:
The Stations of the State Emergency Services or Stations of the Civil Protection or Civil Defense Services are the facilities of the governmental organization, which aims to support the civilian population to deal with natural or anthropic disasters.
This type of service or the organization that provides them, receives different names according to the country.
- Germany: Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe (BBK)
- Austria: Oberösterreichischer Zivilschutzverband
- Australia: State Emergency Service
- Brazil: Civil defense in Brazil
- Greece: Oberösterreichischer Zivilschutzverband (Civil Protection)
- Ukraine: Державна служба України з надзвичайних ситуацій (State Emergency Service)
- Mexico: Civil Protection
- Czechia: Civilní obrana
(end)
- Your list proves how unsuitable the acronym SES is for worldwide use. Why should your fellow Mexican mappers use SES for "Protección Civil" or "Civil Protection"? Why did you pick for the German example a federal agency BKK and not the THW, the latter being the more volunteer-driven organisation?--Polarbear w (talk) 09:59, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
The words 'government organization' gives a vision of full time paid 'professionals'. In Australia these are volunteers. And the word 'declared' on the main page should be removed. I do think that the 'disasters' catered for needs an additional tag, In Australia, for example, they don't cater for fires .. those being dealt with by a much older volunteer organization. I'd suggest floods;fires;storms;landslides;earthquakes;tsunamis;vehicle_crash as starters. Warin61 (talk) 04:44, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Addition. The NSW SES also provide a 'Community First Responder' that provides first aid to things like vehicle crashes. See https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteering-details/community-first-responder/ These don't provide ambulance transport services.
Proposal: emergency=disaster_response
At the moment a new Tag, emergency=disaster_response, is being discussed, that maybe could replace this tag. A participation in the discussion is always welcomed:
