Nodes

How does adding it to nodes make sense if it requires landuse=industrial and that tag can only be applied to areas?

Disregard this. Hadn't noticed the edit. --Absay (talk) 17:25, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

It was a busy head + lack of coffee. Really sorry for that. --naoliv (talk) 17:51, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
No worries man. I have this bad habit of not checking the most recent change and I didn't see you reverted edition. Cheers! ;) --Absay (talk) 18:04, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

amenity=slaughterhouse

Mateusz_Konieczny suggested this would be a more appropriate way to map slaughterhouses and/or abattoirs during a discussion on the OSM telegram channel today (02 Sept 2020).

amenity=* is reserved for "describing useful and important facilities for visitors and residents". I don't personally feel that's appropriate fit (though avoiding them would be useful for many). --Dónal (talk) 13:40, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Maybe it felt better for me as I am not a native speaker. So amenity=prison is not weird for me, but for native speakers it is probably weird Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:06, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
I agree this is about a feature hence it should not be a landuse subtag. Amenity is fine, although my suggestion would be man_made=slaughterhouse. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 22:00, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

slaughterhouse vs abattoir vs meat processing plant

Per a dicussion¹ on https://forum.wordreference.com/, abattoirs are larger facilities which likely rely on large-scale, industrial methods for processing product(s). A slaughterhouse can vary in size from a shed used by a farmer for the process up to an including industrial scale facilities.

I am not familiar with the layout of a slaughterhouse but I suspect there are different sections with pens outdoors and various buildings / other features. Insight to that world would be helpful for ensuring the right taxonomy usage in OpenStreetMap.

It was also pointed out on today's telegram discussion that there are facilities that just process meat (e.g. they take in meat, process and then output it as (packaged) products). i.e. there is a distinction between slaughterhouses and meat processing plants.

Usage statistics

There are currently no uses of the term industrial=abattoir but there are five references to building=abattoir and building=abattoirs. There is one use of the term amenity=abatoire and one use of the term amenity=abattoir.

There are currently 1,096 uses of the term industrial=slaughterhouse, eight references to building=slaughterhouse and 1 reference to building=Slaughter_House. There are 22 uses of the term amenity=slaughterhouse and one use of the term amenity=animal_slaughter.

This article on working undercover in a slaughterhouse provides some insights to the different parts of the facility and may help with more accurate mapping of such facilities (at least on the outside). --Dónal (talk) 14:21, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

buillding=slaughterhouse

Per discussion on telegram earlier today, tagging nodes and/or building areas with landuse=industrial and industrial=slaughterhouse doesn't make any sense.

Should buildings within an area tagged with landuse=industrial and industrial=slaughterhouse have any specific tags? Should the buildings be tagged with building=industrial and building:use=slaughterhouse? Please add your thoughts below...

--Dónal (talk) 13:57, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

building:use=slaughterhouse seems a bit weird, like building:use=supermarket to tag supermarket would be weird. industrial=slaughterhouse seems better, even if it is tricky for small-scale slaughterhouses that may not really fit industrialMateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:04, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Am I right in surmising that your would lean towards using building=industrial with industrial=slaughterhouse? --Dónal (talk) 14:10, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Yes. Main problem is that in some cases it would not be truly industrial, what makes key name a bit misleading. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:16, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Some may want to keep building:use=* values consistent with building=*. Given there's Key:building#Agricultural/Plant_production, if a slaughterhouse has a specific architecture, it can possibly get building=slaughterhouse. industrial=* is more often used for landuse=industrial than building=industrial. ---- Kovposch (talk) 06:54, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
