Type / Function of Base

During the discussions, it was suggested that we also say what type of function the Base carries out.
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2020-December/056690.html
I went with military_function over military_component in this example. "Component" is the more typical term in military doctrine but "function" is probably better understood by mappers.
military_function could include: ground/land, air, maritime, space, law_enforcement, logistics ... etc as needed to cover military organization in different countries."

I'm now thinking that it would be a good idea to also say what functions a Base carries out, possibly in the format
military=base + base=* with options being

Operational - a base that houses "fighting" forces i.e. actual combat units

Headquarters - Command Centre only that doesn't have operational troops posted to it (beyond MPs & Staff) e.g. The Pentagon

Logistics - storage, supply & transport depots

Training - military training schools / establishments

The same breakdown would apply to the Bases of any branch of the military services e.g. an Army infantry battalion, Air Force fighter squadron, Naval ammunition depot etc.

Another potential type of base - military hospitals. I know that there used to be a number of stand-alone military hospitals in various Australian cities, but they've now all been re-located inside the area of other Bases. Would we probably still need the option of distinguishing them if they are the only thing on a particular site. --Fizzie41 (talk) 02:41, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Does this make sense? Any other that people can think of? --Fizzie41 (talk) 02:22, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

This might need a new proposal if you wanted to formally introduce the base=* scheme. Not sure. I think your options would work but it would be worth expanding the examples, e.g. an armoury/armaments depot (e.g. RNAD Coulport) would also be "logistics" and a military port/dock would be "operational". Name of Base

In the proposal, I specified: "name=<name of the base> eg Edwards Air Force Base / Her Majesty's Naval Base, Portsmouth". Since then, I have looked at the details of a number of bases eg
https://www.airforce.gov.au/about-us/bases/queensland/raaf-base-amberley
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNB_Portsmouth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Collingwood_(shore_establishment)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_military_bases
& realised that they should not necessarily be spelt in full, but rather how they actually appear on signage, or in usual use. --Fizzie41 (talk) 05:47, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Military office

This page recommends tagging a military office as office=military (87 uses) yet the existing documented tag is military=office (3 790 uses) and is also the tag listed in landuse=military. We should try to be consistent. Casey boy (talk) 11:30, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. No issue with that at all, even though every other use of it is office=* eg accountant, lawyer, government! :-) --Fizzie41 (talk) 22:18, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
Yep, agreed. It does seem the "wrong" way round but it is clearly the way most widely used. Thanks. Casey boy (talk) 10:33, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Missile base

How do I tag a missile base?

No I don't know what department runs it. Jidanni (talk) 06:52, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

You need to explain what missiles, and what country. Not many countries have ICBM for this to be asked.

ː Should be fine under the breakdown listedː landuse=military military=base military_service= usually either Air Force or Army, depending on country involved? service_branch= possibly Strategic Weapons? base_function=operational

Issue may be getting close enough to map itǃ --Fizzie41 (talk) 00:04, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Land-based surface-to-ship missiles can belong to military_service=navy for coastal defense in Russia and PRC. Coincidentally, they have independent military_service=* for the strategic rocket and missile force.
  • Missiles are service_branch=artillery in an army. Again notably, PLA's Rocket Force was known as the Second Artillery Corps in their Ground Forces.
