Talk:Tag:museum=open air
How to tag the topic of an open air museum?
Let’s say there’s an open air museum that displays boats, anchors, etc. How should I tag it? “museum=open_air;maritime”? Feels a bit messy and makes me wonder whether open_air really makes sense as a value for the museum tag.
The other museum values all relate to the focus/subject/topic of the museum, but open_air doesn’t seem to fit that pattern. ArcticRocinante (talk) 23:25, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- Possibly as
- subject=maritime + museum=open_air; or
- museum=maritime + outdoor=yes. Something B (talk) 00:24, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- While the direction of subject=* , using it for the categories found in museum=* now makes it unable to be used for the exact entity. Eg
Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum how to distribute *=maritime , *=shipwreck ) , *=Graveyard of the Great Lakes / *=Whitefish Point / *=Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve ?
artwork_subject=* is an awkward workaround from history. Dedicated war_memorial=* was suggested to remove memorial=war_memorial as a piecemeal solution, with memorial:type=* declared "deprecated".
For this content specifically, much of *=maritime should be eg *=naval . And difference with museum=military for that??? Assuming museum=war is for specific conflicts.
2 particular aspects are attempted in Proposal:Subject#Examples
- While the direction of subject=* , using it for the categories found in museum=* now makes it unable to be used for the exact entity. Eg
- memorial=sculpture
- memorial:subject=* : what it is remembering. (cf a hundred dedicated_to=* in polytheism; a few commemorates=* in natural=tree )
- artwork:subject=* : what's depicted in the piece of work (together with, or symbolizing what it is remembering)
- The subcategory museum:subject=modern art;contemporary art is demonstrated as freeform text (instead of finite predefined val for museum=art )
- memorial=sculpture
- outdoor=yes has some problems for combination and exact use.

- The treatment has been discussed before.
- Quite the opposite, I find museum=open_air suitable for the likes of museum=* . Others should be moved towards the likes of subject=* .
museum=local is something else. On top of museum_type=* being used for the management needlessly, it can have the geographical scope and level of collection (think: national collection on the topic of a person vs personal collection of a universal topic) distinguished.

museum=open_air and/or museum:type=open_air
So, after some discussion in the forum https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/freilichtmuseen-wie-taggen/79104/ i changed the a lot of page to make it concise so its clear what to tag. I changed tourism=theme_park, tourism=museum, museum=open_air and also outdoor and "How to map a". Now Rtfm changed the page so it should be tagged with `museum:type=open_air` (something they invented yesterday without discussion) https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:museum:type and its simply wrong (on this page at least!), plus its ignoring every other page. My initial comment about the changes were just on the https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Tag:tourism%3Dtheme_park page because i simply missed this one. So, Rtfm does not seem to want to discuss their changes beforehand, i open a discussion about this.
As i don't think `museum:type=open_air` is neccessarly wrong and sounds fitting, it should be mentioned and it maybe should even be changed - but with discussion beforehand, ideally in the forum as well. —— Negreheb 08:05, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
Discussions in the Wiki in English
There's a discussion page for a reason. It's plain wrong to refer to an individual forum of one country to revert changes which make perfect sense, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Tag:museum:type%3Dopen_air Rtfm (talk) 13:18, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- You did not discuss this change at all. I did and i changed some pages to make it concise and i forgot to mention it on this page. More than half a year before. I also mentioned the forum-thread in the change-comment, so everybody is able to follow and/or participate the discussion. You did not discuss it anywhere and invented something new and changed the wiki-page immediately without discussion anywhere. Feel free to start a discussion in the general forum. —— Negreheb 13:05, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Read the discussion above : "Feels a bit messy and makes me wonder whether open_air really makes sense as a value for the museum tag." I just offered the non-messy solution for it, but you only nag around about your discussions which obviously didn't lead to a solution. Would you even accept non-German speakers ? - Proposal process is for proposals, solutions and changes in tagging. The tag or key page is to document current usage. maro21 20:58, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
