telephone, TV and internet services
What tag is to be used for cabinets for telephone, TV and internet services? --Pander (talk) 11:51, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
- Have a look to man_made=street_cabinet. It had just been approved. Fanfouer (talk) 10:59, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Abandon in favor of man_made=street_cabinet
man_made=street_cabinet has been reviewed by community recently and it is recommended to stop using power=cable_distribution_cabinet in favor of man_made=street_cabinet + street_cabinet=power.
It is furthermore possible to give extra details about other power cabinet than simple cable distribution one with these tags. Fanfouer (talk) 12:19, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- I saw this page, and thinking we could possibly restore it for use. The issue is there are different types of power street cabinets, for example at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Australian_Tagging_Guidelines/Utilities_and_infrastructure#Electrical_Cabinets we have two types. 1. the kiosk distribution transformer cabinet, this is a larger cabinet mounted on a concrete pad housing a transformer to step down the voltage to the final consumer voltage. We tag these as man_made=street_cabinet + utility=power + power=transformer + transformer=distribution. 2. the low voltage network pillar, these are smaller and don't contain a transformer, they simply form the connection point between the "grid" and the residences, they are there to provide easier access for maintenance or issues and provide devices to protect the grid network. These I believe best tagged man_made=street_cabinet + utility=power + power=cable_distribution_cabinet. Aharvey (talk) 02:58, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hello. This value is not a good concept to distinguish power cabinets, it has been discouraged for good reasons. It should not come back for sake of consistency in power key. cable_distribution_cabinet merges three concepts in one value, nothing encourages us more to refine it with more elaborated ontology.
- Do you confirm the first kind of cabinet (cabinet hosting a transformer to feed households) is not a substation in your country? (some countries define them as substation, so power=substation + transformer=main). See Proposal:Substation_nodes_extension for distinguish the two valid possibilities.
- Low voltage cabinets may be defined as connexion box or fuse box but we miss tags for that (and cable_distribution_cabinet isn't a valid one). Depending on the exact need, we could add it to the pending service supplies proposal, still draft and no announce yet but I'm moving fast on it. Fanfouer (talk) 08:44, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. Okay I won't suggest to use cable_distribution_cabinet. I don't know enough about electricity networks, but the reason I was told on Discord was these kiosk substations don't contain switchgear, only a transformer, therefore we should use power=transformer and not power=substation and that the fact we call them substations is just a colloquialism. Besides the name we use dosn't have any bearing on the tag, eg. whether we call it football or soccer it's still sport=soccer in OSM. I don't know really. Aharvey (talk) 11:21, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
