Centerline or thalweg?

For rivers, the geometry should follow the  thalweg where this information is available (it is usually not visible in imagery, except when the water level is very low). In  open, shallow lakes, being able to follow the thalweg is important for navigation. So, should waterway=flowline always follow the centerline of the water body? Should waterway=fairway be mapped separately for the navigable route? --Fernando Trebien (talk) 13:17, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
