It is not a proper waterway

This value doesn't relate to an actual waterway and gets more and more used. We currently have a more general framework to describe milestones and markers with marker=*.
It should be refined with a more appropriate key as to prevent waterway=* cluttering. Fanfouer (talk) 07:36, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

What do you mean by “This value doesn't relate to an actual waterway”? What else? I don't have any major problems with the tag because it is the equivalent of highway=milestone (or that would have to be changed as well – not very likely with > 200K uses). And it is quite clear when and what it should be used for. This may be one reason why it is being used more and more. However, I also use marker=* for many other cases (and consider waterway=milestone and highway=milestone as special cases, which is easy to remember) ... --Goodidea (talk) 09:10, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
